I really liked how liberal tumblr was, as I myself am liberal. However last night a post was commented on/reblogged over 20k times and the amount of insanity to it was just too much. Basically the post warned "PoC" to watch out/stay inside because "White people are upset!" that Romney lost-and that they were going to riot in the streets hurting/murdering any PoC they saw. Most of the people commenting agreed with it. The few people who brought some sanity to it were shouted down. Not everyone who voted for Romney were 'white', just because someone is a Republican it doesn't make them 'racist', and no one was going to start a giant mob and kill every 'black' person they saw.

It's only real purpose was to spread pointless fear and panic on a night that should have been full of celebration. Some people. ;/

I saw that reposted around on both Tumblr and Plurk. I thought it was a little weird and panick-y but since I'm white I was wondering if I just didn't have the right perspective to "get" it so I didn't say anything...definitely didn't reblog it, though.

(Come to think of it, has there been any riots or violence over the election? The worst I've heard about is Trump's Twitter Tantrum.)

That entire post just seems like unnecessary fear mongering. I'm sure there are fringe elements and white surpremicist nut jobs out there who would be willing to hurt POC (or even other whites) for supporting Obama, but they are in the severe minority. And all the bullshit about "YOU SHOULD ESPECIALLY BE CAREFUL IF YOU'RE IN TEXAS OR A RURAL AREA". Um, no. There are some really sketchy places in Texas but it's a biiiiig fucking state, and just because somewhere is a rural area doesn't mean it's automatically full of Deliverance-style rednecks just looking for someone to lynch. WTF, people. Also, not everyone who voted for Romney was white, and not everyone who voted for Obama was non-white. So, wtf.

I did see someone mention in the comments that several POC had been hurt for supporting Obama. Does anyone know about this/have links? I've seen some truly, truly awful things said and there are a lot of people showing their ass over things, but I haven't heard about any physical violence. I'm genuinely curious and would like to know if it really has happened. The only thing I've heard about was the woman before the election in Louisiana who was set on fire for wearing an Obama shirt, which was fucking terrible, but it seemed more like an incident involving fringe nutjobs than any sort of systematic "ROMNEY LOST. KILL ALL THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS." action.

the first thing people should know about tumblr is that folks there are melodramatic and uneducated. from people getting easily checked facts completely wrong to forming suicide support groups in case romney wins (are you people fucking serious though, like really??) it gets super ridiculous.

it's also hard to avoid that kind of thing, since even if you can avoid people who slip some of that whack shit in their blog every now and then, not everybody is going to tag their controversial stuff. when it comes to politics i tend to expect this kind of thing from tumblr's userbase. part of me thinks a lot of them overreact like your example to come across as these emotionally tormented victims in hopes that people will rally around them for attention. it's weird, it's like they want to put people on the defensive for no specific reason. idk. i just try to ignore them, even if i see a post going around with skewed facts or clear bias. if it's a popular post it's already too late.

there are conservatives like that too though. tumblr is just one of those nonpolitical social media sites that a certain political demographic has dominance over.

Your point is valid, but saying you're done with tumblr because of this is dumb to me. It's like saying "I'm done with the internet because I read a shitty article people thought was inspiring" or something likewise. Tumblr--like with LJ, reddit, facebook, and other social wesbites--is what you make of it. It depends on who you follow/friend/subscribe to. If you're finding stupid posts on your dashboard, unfollow those users! Simple as that.

If you don't like the actual website or how it works, then yeah, sure, be done with tumblr, that's rational. But don't complain about dumb posts on your dash if you follow idiots...

And all the unnecessary hate against people who don't fall under the LGBTQ and/or PoC and/or female/gender-neutral/fluid is just fucking awful, even if that person has NEVER said, done, or even will do anything could be bad with regards to all that. Hell, they could be allies!!! But with a recent post on ONTD_P with regards to that topic, I'm surprised anyone will even announce being allies anymore due to the unnecessary hate for that.
