Knowing that the bulk of LJ fandoms are based in the U.S. -- and assuming that you interact with a lot of American fans -- anti-Palestinian sentiments are unfortunately inevitable. Folks here in the U.S. tend to conflate opposition to Israel's expansion and support of Palestinian land rights with anti-Semitism (as you surely know), and our national perception of Israel is overall wrapped up with feelings of guilt and horror over the Holocaust. As such, a lot of young, pro-Israeli Americans don't look at the Israel-Palestine conflicts with clear eyes.

This comment made me want to throw up almost as much as the OP's secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Why? I'm not saying that that's the right attitude to take -- it's just what I encounter on a frequent basis.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Why? I would say it is spot on.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Are you as stupid as you sound? It's a perfectly reasonable - and rational - analysis.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
No.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Truth hurt like a mofo, huh.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It sure does, OP. That's why you're deluding yourself into thinking anyone who is pro-Israel just has clouded vision. It's okay bby, whatever you need to tell yourself to sleep at night

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the OP of the first comment in this thread, but not of the secret. I'm also not the anon you replied to (though the "mofo" should have clued you in to that).

What I meant by "pro-Israel" in my comment was "pro-Israel and completely anti-Palestinian." I've met too many people like that in the U.S., and their position usually is caused by clouded vision -- they tend to understand the conflicts in black-and-white terms (with the benefit of the doubt going to Israel).

Whatever *you* need to do to make yourself feel A-OK about murdered Palestinian children...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
What is your take on the Israel-Palestine conflicts?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Is this going to be the new "thoughts on yaoi?" Because the original is much snappier.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no. I was just asking.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I honestly thought it was meant to sound like that. My mistake.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
No problem! I like to keep international affairs out of fandom for the most part.

+1

like i said below, there is way too much emotion/history wrapped up in this from both sides for it to ever be a rational discussion

and the heavy-handed pro-israel bias that the united states institutionally feeds everyone is actually very difficult to miss if you're even paying a little bit of attention.

It has more to do with the fact most people cannot seem to separate Jewish from Israel for the sake of policy actions and laws. Israel is a political entity that absolutely deserves scrutiny and criticism and questioning - just like the United States or Iran or any nation. People who bristle when Israel is discussed purely on its governmental actions and equate that to anti-Judaism - I try to avoid conversation because we aren't talking about the same thing and I have no hope of a fair hearing. It's like someone equating criticism of U.S. policy to anti-Christian sentiment (which, think of how you view those people, just for a minute ...). Thankfully more people seem to be realizing the two can be separated for purposes of debate.

It's like you've never been to an American college in your life, young, college-educated Americans are very pro-Palestine

And it has nothing to do with the Holocaust, Jews have been moving to Palestine well before WWII even occurred, maybe you should actually read some history books and educate yourself before you start talking like you actually know anything about Zionism or Israel (protip: Zionism as an ideology started in the late 19th century, around the time of the Dreyfus Affair, and European countries have had a long history of oppressing Jewish people that goes back to the middle ages)
