What do you want? Approval? Seriously? You want us to clap and say, "Good for you for upholding your ignorance." Because you know it's taboo because you wrote a goddamn secret about it rather than say it aloud in a normal thread. Now if you actually had been unaware of the taboo while doing "blackface," you ignorance could have been overlooked as an innocent cultural mistake. But, again, that's not what is happening here, is it?

But, hey, you already got one person above patting you on the back for being small minded. So, I guess you got what you want.

But, again, you, personally know it's wrong because you decided to make this statement while being anon.

Gee, I wonder why someone would say something like that anonymously instead of in an open forum where people can jump on them for having a different opinion.
And before you say it, no - not OP.

Way to miss the point of what I said.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a point? Where?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Your opinion is not sacred just because you have it.

Respecting other peoples opinions just because they're someone's opinion is a fucking horrible idea.

You only need to respect other peoples opinions if the opinion is worth respecting.

Taboo in USA and some other few countries. The world is too large, the culture in each country is too different and expect that everyone hold to certain culture standards is... well, I don't have to explain it, do I?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
+1
The OP said right there in the secret that their country doesn't have a history of blackface. US culture trumps all, news at eleven.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're actually stupid enough to think that the US is the only place with a history of blackface? Jesus fuck.

(Also, I would like to know where this magical country is with no history of blackface. Upper Imagistania, perhaps.)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're so cleary american.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
And they can't even see it lol.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
If this had said "no history of racism" I'd agree, but there are lots, lots of countries whose problems with race have nothing to do with blackface.

But the OP knows it is taboo. That's the thing. This isn't a case of stumbling on a photo of someone in blackface who didn't know blackface was taboo. This is someone who knows it is seen as offensive and doesn't care. Even more, she wants kudos for not caring. That's the problem right there. She/he is looking for recognition in the comments, otherwise why make this secret at all? What is she looking to get out by writing this secret? It's either that or wanting to start wank.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Taboo in certain post-colonial places, not everywhere. Offensive via racial power dynamics in those places, not everywhere. It doesn't even sound like real blackface. US reactions and reasoning don't apply everywhere, nor should they. The rest of the world would like to live without having to tiptoe around your sensitivities all the damn time, especially when you're not even involved.

Still didn't answer the question. What's the point of this secret? To start wank or to get approval for doing blackface?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I was always under the impression that sharing a secret was exactly that. Sharing a secret. This isn't something the secret-maker could just run around talking about, so they posted about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
To make a comment and relate an experience without having to directly put up with huffy responses.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? What's the point in any secret? At least this one actually has a reason to be a secret -- being an uncommon viewpoint -- as opposed to so many *common* opinions that get posted as omgsecret.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because the OP has come into contact with enough virulently hateful people who can't conceive that cultures differ.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

There's a not so subtle fucking difference.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-09 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is blackface.

This is blackface.

This? Blackface.

This is darkened skin. NOT BLACKFACE

What if OP was an Asian living in Europe and cosplayed as a black character? What if OP was black living in China and cosplaying a Chinese character?
Is that problematic?
Or is it only problematic when white people do it, no matter if their countries have a black-face history or not because "all white people are the same, no matter where they come from".

Cultures matter.
Context matters.

OP isn't doing actual black-face. Black-face is done to mock black people. Cosplay is done to pay homage to a character you like.
I'm "mixed race" according to most North Americans. In my own country nobody gives a flying fuck.
Some perceive me as Chinese, some perceive me as white, others just don't give a shit what I am and judge me based on my behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
There are some instances where you can't hold another culture's hangups above your own. If the OP is in their own country, which has no history or conception of blackface, then that is okay. It's not ignorance because it's not being used as an insult or directed towards those who have been harmed by it. It's simply a cultural difference.

This.

...seriously? Since when does this EVER happen? SJWs dogpile you regardless of whether you were being an actual asshat or just made an honest mistake.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
How about "good for you for not letting US cultural imperialism rule your life?". OF COURSE OP is anon, f!s is full of holier than thou Americans incapable of comprehending that different cultures have different issues and deal with them differently than people in the US would.
