And by the end of it? It was a pet name for her, too, so your logic is moot.

Her memories were taken away from her almost the whole game. Everyone was acting like cardboard cut outs except King Candy. I'm not saying she's NOT nine, but I'm saying you can argue that they're all much older, but pretend to be nine when their game is on/when their memories are being repressed. We saw a couple of characters who changed personalities once they were being "played."
