Like everything else, different strokes for different folks. I'd probably be in completely different fandoms if I didn't like AUs because the canon is FULL of them. The concept of the multiverse (specifically Marvel in my case and I'm sure other fandoms have similar concepts) must drive you completely up the wall.

Personally, I find it very interesting within canon. Playing the What if game can lead you into some very interesting stories. Changing one thing from the "main" canon, can throw the whole universe on its head. I'm intrigued by that concept.

But like I said, different strokes.
