slightly OT but have you ever noticed that any time you tell someone their icon is creepy they will say "it's me"? I stopped doing that after it happened a few times (and because I realized that nobody cares how their icon makes you feel), but I've seen other people having that exact same exchange. It's probably an internet rule or something.

I always wanted to say "WELL YOUR FACE IS CREEPY!" but I just learned to scroll instead. Most browsers have a way to block pictures these days, or you can install an app that lets you do that.

You could also just tell them how you feel but that might start drama (so you should definitely do it).

lolol I love the image of you telling several people, in casual conversation, that their icons are creepy. I'm imagining it in chat, and there would be an awkward pause while nobody typed and then a small "it's me" shows up and more awkward silence.

Sidenote, I used to have an icon on a different account that I really really loved but one day a friend told me she found it very creepy and unsettling. I felt guilty and never used the icon again even though it was a favorite. Some of us do care (probably too much).

Haha yeah, that's pretty much how it went down. This was back in the early 2000s when I first joined LJ and commenting on people's icons seemed to be a thing that people did? I dunno. Now I only mention icons if it's to give a compliment, lol.

That's too bad :( You shouldn't feel guilty though, you didn't know. I have a bunch of icons that I don't use in public comms but I like having them for myself.

People should have common sense enough to know when their picture is creepy. It is a sad day in the world that apparently this is not the case.

I saw this happen on a forum. The poor guy basically said, "Well, it's me and it's the best picture I have" and I just felt so bad for him. I've just come to assume if I don't recognize the person, the picture's of poor/not professional quality, and the person in the picture isn't model gorgeous, it's probably the person's actual picture.

ayrt - Yeah, that too. It's pretty easy to tell when it's a personal picture, but I was an idiot back then.

I'm creeped out by my shirt, not my face, but then, it's a really good shot of my face, my nose creeps me out in real life/when I see my face "live" in the mirror. :P I've...gotten a lot of strong words about my icon, which is pretty much the only reason I still use it. >:)

I don't like to used multiple icons, I like to just have ONE icon I use to mean "me" and not like whatever I'm feeling or my reaction or whatever, so I'm slow to switch out icons. I'm still narrowing down my options, especially since I plan to use this icon for other purposes. :)
