Jere's a weird idea that either you can sympathize with a character and therefore think he's not really a bad guy, or you cannot sympathize with a character because he's a bad guy.

This is exactly what I think goes on in my fandom about my favorite characters/OTP. People either make them misunderstood, completely woobify one of them, or completely cannot allow that they might do anything that makes any sense at all.

Where, for me, the attraction is that they're villains. Not just that they're awful, but that there's a tension between their being attractive and interesting and their being, well, evil jerkfaces.
