Re: This is how I feel every time Tom talks about how 'wounded' Loki is

I don't think he's excusing him at all. It's just that a lot of people can't understand that just because a character might be wounded emotionally and have a lot of issues, that doesn't mean he can't also commit inexcusable and unforgiveable actions.

This is why you get the split in fandom between ridiculous Loki stans and people that think Loki's just a one-off villain - there's a weird idea that either you can sympathize with a character and therefore think he's not really a bad guy, or you cannot sympathize with a character because he's a bad guy. There's no in between for a lot of people, which I, personally, think is kind of silly.

NEGL I used to be kind of iffy about Hiddleston's take on the character until I read his letter to Kieron Gillen (which totally didn't really fit with kid Loki, but I guess when you consider Siege Loki, yeah...) http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/10/25/loki-actor-tom-hiddleston-fan-letter-kieron-gillen-journey-into-mystery/

Jere's a weird idea that either you can sympathize with a character and therefore think he's not really a bad guy, or you cannot sympathize with a character because he's a bad guy.

This is exactly what I think goes on in my fandom about my favorite characters/OTP. People either make them misunderstood, completely woobify one of them, or completely cannot allow that they might do anything that makes any sense at all.

Where, for me, the attraction is that they're villains. Not just that they're awful, but that there's a tension between their being attractive and interesting and their being, well, evil jerkfaces.

I definitely think Loki's got issues and that those issues are clear in the movie. Maybe that's why I think Hiddles emphasizes them too much in interviews? I can understand sympathizing with Loki to a degree, but like you said, there are so many people in fandom who don't stop there; they don't think he's responsible for his own actions. Or if he is, they think those actions are justified. I even like Loki, and I really did sympathize with him in Thor, and I do think he's a complex guy...but some of Tom's comments make me question how he sees Loki. And some fans take what Tom says and run with it. Especially the 'Loki just needs a hug' thing. I imagine he said it jokingly, but often feel fandom didn't catch that part.

Now if he spoke about Loki all the time in this manner, I would be more inclined to agree with him.
