tbh i blame a lot of this on dirk/jake fandom too which maybe i should have made clear..literally every dirk/jake fic i've read after it was recced to me doesn't read like "dirk is rose with a dick" or anything close to their canon selves, it literally reads like name swapped john/dave.

Yes, my perception of the characters is being influenced too much by fanon.

Also, and this is just me, but I just don't think that Dirk and Jake are that well developed compared to Dave and John. In fact, I'm reminded by that part of Meenah's interactive adventure through the afterlife where Karkat is talking to Terezi and mentions how their ancestors feel like --I forgot the exact wording-- shallow parodies of their own group.

I feel the same regarding Dirk and Jake. Roxy and Jane seem a bit more developed. Heck, Dirk's AutoResponder seems more developed.

Maybe I just don't get the characters, though. I liked, for example, Feferi, Equius and Nepeta, but I also think they lacked characterization, so maybe I'm not imagining things here? (Or digging deeper into my own perceptions, I don't know.)

no no i definitely agree with you re: their development, esp when they're compared with roxy & jane...they just fall flat. i go back and forth on whether the alpha kids are intended to be shallow/parodies like i'm pretty sure the ancestors are, but i think yr spot on with that observation imo.

I hold hope that there's still more development to be seen in the form of Dirk and Jake's relationship. Pressuring Jake the way Dirk is doing might very well come back to bite him in the ass, and Dirk might end up paralleling Dave with a personal failing in the future; he's just too perfect/capable right now (saving the day in the Synchronize and Unite flashes)... Who knows, maybe the two are connected! Right now Dirk's flaw is his aggressive and bizarre way of wooing Jake, so that might be expanded on.

And Jake might finally assert himself without overdoing it (like when he beat up Meenah) in the form of saying "no" to Dirk. And that might make Dirk break down. Oh, I can see it now... c:
