It's interesting to see a portrayal of a not-very-maternal mother. But I would have preferred the Nina/Olivia storyline for that.

Also, I just generally wanted more Nina. I also though the Nina/Broyles ship was interesting, mostly because it was two older (mature) but different people. But they dropped that too. Oh well :(

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)That said, I do like the emotional issues and friction that stemmed from that and the situation (Peter what the fuck did you do?! Olivia having issues connecting w/ Edda and Peter but trying to grasp on to what she has, Walter's EXTREMELY DEPRESSING FACES AND LITTLE COMMENTS ABOUT EDDA OH GOD NO it wouldn't be a new Fringe season if Walter wasn't breaking my heart) so I did care in the end, but like I said, I do feel a bit weird about the sort-of-forced connection via the viewer.
It was not as bad as some shows have done it (see: Doctor Who - I was initially super glad they actually adressed the inherent issues and resulting emotions with the whole situation in Fringe since I was expecting so very little after DW) but it's still hard to connect with. Especially since we never really got to see Peter and Olivia as parents to a little girl except for in flashbacks, and that's just not really enough to form a connection (for me personally) to their new roles and attachment to this girl, let alone the girl herself.
wow tl;dr sorry

THIS. I hate when we're introduced to a character and TOLD we should care about the because they're some sort of relation to a major character. We just met them and know nothing about them, but since they're a major character's [fill in the relation], we should care! No, make the effort to MAKE US care about them, okay?
You mention Jenny from DW: Yeah, why should I care about what happened to her? I mean, any more than I would any other one-episode character? Oh right, I don't. At all. In fact, I liked her LESS because of the obvious, blunt "LIKE HER! SHE'S IMPORTANT!" crap they shoved at us.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 10:01 am (UTC)(link)Honestly I think they did try with Edda and she's had a fair bit of characterisation and importance to the plot apart from being their daughter. Face of the resistance? Willing to cross lines not even Olivia is really comfortable with? I kind of liked it, but yeahhh the show was still relying a bit on her being their daughter. Heck, that was the entire season 4's cliffhanger, wasn't it?
Honestly from DW I was thinking more about River, but Jenny works just as well. Wow I can't actually believe DW did this twice.

It kind of annoys me because basically the relationship was played for cheap angst. What I wouldn't give for a normal parent child relationship that didn't turn the parents into momzilla and daddy-doormat, or do the soap opera time skip from infancy to teen years. So damn rare.

...BUT...
I'm still bitter they erased bb!Henry and we never got to see alt!Liv deal with that loss.
