Anyone watching Corrie lately?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's this plotline going on in this British soap called 'Coronation Street', that's left me kind of conflicted. Recently, an openly gay guy called Marcus has fallen in love with his female best friend Maria, despite him never liking girls before, and in the past having a long term relationship with another guy on the show.
Maria then broke up with her longtime boyfriend for him, their neighbours found out about the scandal and...well, it's a soap, so much drama and homophobia etc is going around the place.

What's making me scratch my head is what this storyline is trying to convey. It could be that he's been bisexual all this time, and is only just realizing this, but reading a little into the backstory, the actor said 'this isn't about Marcus turning bi, but just falling in love with his best friend, who happens to be a girl, which leaves him confused.'

Sexuality is always such a difficult thing to discuss, and the way they're treating it in the programme is getting me all kinds of skittish. Is this a genuine study into sexual orientation, and how labels are essentially reduntant when it comes to love? Or is this a step backwards into gay representation in television, (which admittedly, is VERY underepresented as it is.)It bothers me because a. they might just drop this like a hotcake at the end and revert Marcus's sexuality back to gay status without a second thought just because of ratings. Not to mention this is being represented to a much older target generation, who may think that Marcus is getting 'cured'?

I'd like to hear opinions on other people who may have been following the storyline. Or who may have opinions of their own on the subject. It's been on my mind for a while, so a discussion would be cool. ^^

I've been watching too and I thought much the same as you've written actually. It seems a strange storyline so far, but I'm not sure how to judge it yet. Soaps are a good way of getting people to discuss issues that they'd otherwise shy away from, and it could be the beginning of presenting a bisexual character which may turn out positive overall. But as you said it could be interpreted that all a gay man needs is to find the right woman.

SA. I just noticed you mention the actor's comment (should read things better!) and I really don't know what to make of that. I wonder how much information about the direction of the storyline he has? But assuming he's right it does seem a strange choice of story to tell.

Not the same article I read but it says something similar. Maybe it's just the actor's opinion on the story line, rather than the writer's, but I just don't see how this storyline is going to end up. The idea of their relationship lasting seems downright impossible in my head, unless they left the street for a new start, but I don't think it's gonna come to that.

Unfortunately, bisexuals don't really exist on television, and I have a nasty feeling that after a while, Maria will be considered an 'experiment', and he'll end up reverting to a 100% homosexual again. Which would be frustrating way to end it. :/

I like to think that bisexuals don't exist on television *yet*, and that Corrie (or one of the others) is reasonably likely to go down that route at some point soonish, even if not with Marcus. IDK, maybe I expect too much.

I think Marcus is clearly very close friends with Maria, but he's also seduced by the idea of family/kids. Thinking now, I could see a story based around him realising he is gay not bi, and doesn't want her like that, but does enjoy being a step-dad and possibly considering having a baby with her, and months of angsty drama based around that. It'll be interesting to see where they do go with it.

I just hope the writers have a bit of common sense about it.

It's the writers and production team changing the character because of the backlash from viewers about "too many gays". The Beeb finally issued an ultimatum after yet another massive ratings drop. The producers were trying to bring in new audience members and instead lost a huge chunk of the hardcore fanbase. By 2015 there cannot be more than 1 gay character and 1 bisexual character and one of them may have a same sex partner who does not get screen time.

If that's true, that fucking sucks, but don't be blaming the BBC - Corrie is on ITV.
