Okay, I have to admit, this bugs me a little. Loki wasn't just a 'caricature of villainy' before he became kid Loki - sure, in the earlier comics he was a pretty boring one-note villain, but there was plenty more to his character in Siege and in the JMS run. He may have been a bad guy, but he was a bad guy with style and a twisted sort of heart. I mean. Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers came out long before the movie and before the kid Loki issues, and so did the Trials of Loki.

He was a boring caricature of a villain only in the earlier runs. He's been well established as having depth and an interesting psyche for a while now.

And yet everyone (Gillen included) claims that Loki was just a flat villain until the movies and kid Loki came along.

This is something I've noticed too and I admit it bothers me somewhat. I did sort of get into Marvel thanks to the films (and thanks to DC rebooting-I've been reading DC for an embarrassingly long time) but when I started reading about Loki in 616 I found him fascinating and I had started on the newer stuff. He's actually become one of my favorite Marvel characters-both as an adult and as a kid-due to the complexity that's been added to him over the last decade.... Also I enjoy reading about villains.

I find myself scratching my head over how often I see people say he was one note up until Thor (the film) or until Gillen's JiM. He was still an asshole but he hasn't had the "evil for the sake of evil" motive for quite some time.

God this. I love MCU Loki and kid!Loki but they are not the first incarnations of him that show Loki being more than just 'evil for the lulz'.

Loki wasn't a caricature of evil, but A LOT of writers write him as one. The best runs everyone remembers- Walk Simonson, Straczynski, Gillen- present him as a full character with many facets and layers, but that's part of the reason why they are the best runs everyone remembers. Thor had many mediocre and bad runs, and Loki was used as a stock typical 'evul' villain many, many, MANY times. Both 'Blood Brothers' and 'Trials of Loki' do not take place in the 616 Universe.
