when assholes are right

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
You know what sucks? When someone you think is a total asshole says something you completely agree with. This has been happening to me a lot lately, and it's infuriating.

Anyone on F!S have stories about this?

Wait. You have to give examples on what kind of things you've been agreeing with assholes on.

Off the top of my head:
- The Dark Knight is terrible and overrated.
- Titan A.E. is awesome and underrated.
- Anyone who thinks its a good idea to put a small animal in a blender deserves to have horrible things happen to them.

(Yes, I know, one of these things is not like the other.)

Oh. I'm a little disappointed.

I don't get to capslock "PERHAPS YOU ANON AGREE WITH ASSHOLES BECAUSE YOU ANON ARE AN ASSHOLE!" except for how I just did.

Totally agree on your third point. Only large animals should be put into blenders. The small ones get stuck under the blades in the mechanism and fuck up perfectly good blenders.

But Titan AE *IS* awesome. How is that being an asshole?
(Especially since it came out around the time of Armegeddon and Deep Impact. The reversal was quite refreshing.)

Sometimes I think I'm a nice person and then I say some really awful, mean-spirited shit that I realize I actually mean, so yeah. Similar feelings here.

It's the Ad Hominem fallacy.

Just because the speaker is a bad person doesn't lessen the argument.

Like Hitler could say the sky is blue.

Doesn't mean the sky isn't blue. Doesn't mean you're a bad person for agreeing with him.

Yeah... on an intellectual level I can accept that sometimes jerks hold the same views as me, but when I actually hear those views coming out of the jerk's mouth? The kneejerk reaction is something like "Yes, that is correct- wait, you're an asshole, why I'm agreeing with you?"

This. It doesn't blow my mind when someone i dislike has a point. Doesn't mean that I suddenly start to like them either.

Meh, even assholes are right about some stuff. Being right about some stuff doesn't make someone right about other stuff.

To answer your question: oh hell yes. I know some people who are amazingly insightful and intelligent and perceptive even though they're snotty obnoxious little pricks. It's a thing called "college." So irritating. :\

There's plenty of intelligent educated people who just happen to be arseholes.

They're going to have some solid insights more then you'd think.

Thread over?

Well, it seems like this is your problem. I apologize for the TV Tropes link.

I hate it when people are who assholes in one of my fandoms migrate into other fandoms. There are a few people in particular that I just want to be like "STOP LIKING WHAT I LIKE OMG."

... which is not the same as what you posted, but I know that feel also, bro.

I have a younger cousin who is really smart and is involved with her school's Gay-Straight Alliance but she's also really rude and yells at people for no reason.

Well, there was the time Cassandra Clare actually made a really good post on her blog about Internet bullying.

This thread ain't wanky enuff

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of gross neckbeards would viciously defend their right to make disgusting rape jokes and whatever other bullshit, using the argument of "anything can be funny" and "with humor nothing is sacred".

...

They may make a slew of other arguments that I don't agree with, I basically agree that with humor nothing is off limits? I don't see why we shouldn't look at jokes on a case-by-case basis. Often times the funniness of a "horrible" joke hinges on acknowledging how horrible the horrible thing is. It's not even the punchline, it's part of building up to a POINT.

But yeah, yeah, humor and rape/the mentally handicapped/dead children/the Holocaust/famine/idk should never be within miles of each other, everything's the same, always.

But I can't say this, because then people will know that I'm a monster. :(

Re: This thread ain't wanky enuff

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is people who believe "with humor, nothing is sacred", but turn around as act as if humor itself is sacred. Just because something might be intended to be funny, doesn't actually make it untouchable by criticism and mockery and rejection from those who weren't amused. These are the same kind of people who think freedom of speech means getting to say whatever they want without anyone saying whatever they want back, so the dissonance isn't surprising.

Re: This thread ain't wanky enuff

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree. Intention doesn't make a joke funny, or unoffensive. I do think jokes can be inappropriate and offensive. I do think there is a Too Soon rule. Just because you told something in the format of a joke doesn't mean you are excused from criticism. I mean, do bad jokes not exist? What I'm objecting to is the people who reject entire swaths of jokes on principle, regardless of context, intention, or (this will sound absurd, but) the funniness of the joke.

And obviously the "freedom of speech means no one can object to the asinine things I say" people are idiots. There is a reason many of the Humor is Sacred people are fucking douchebags, cause these two crowds tend to run together.
