- If you're watching the TV series, you don't really need to know much of anything, but it glosses over a LOT of the protagonist's motivation and has basically nothing at all for the Shirou-Rin relationship since it's mostly based off the route in the VN where Saber was the love interest with scraps of stuff cobbled from the other routes.
- If you're watching the Unlimited Blade Works movie... I don't even think there was much of a point to it aside from "hey let's animate cool fight sequences" since they really railroad the plot and at least 2 of the major female characters play minimal roles.
You don't have to know a lot of Nasuverse to watch it, but the VN is definitely better, if you can manage to get your hands on it. And you don't even need preknowledge for that, either, as they explain all the important stuff. All you'll miss with no background is a few little nods to other canons in the same setting.
