Hey moron, I think the conversation's progressed past that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
No, I brought up Tolkien being racist and sexist because people like over looking that and the main reason we're all talking about Hussie right now is the 'omg racism' angel. I wanted to point out that LoTRs isn't perfect and that people are not committing some kind of unholy blasphemy by comparing things you don't like to it. Seriously. It's a good story, but its just a book. And really I wouldn't compare Homestuck to Tolkien anyways, for a great deal of reasons. I just dislike it when people act like you cannot compare anything to it. I'm sorry I upset you so greatly.

You really didn't.

I'm saying you can't compare the two because they're entirely different genres with entirely different subject matters. It's like comparing some random Russian symphony to some random Red Hot Chilli Peppers song. Both are good, neither are holy, but any comparison is going to be pretty nonsensical.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
In all seriousness, I was simply going for the comparison of one long thing to another. Hussie always said he meant to make it all sequential. So only reading the first week of the comic (which unlike most webcomics is about 50 pages or so) or less and saying you gave it a try is about the same as abandoning a long tome in the first chapter or two because you are bored with the world building.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
But if you're bored, then you're bored. If the first chapter bores me, then no, I'm probably not going to continue because I'm not seeing any reason to.

"You didn't try hard enough to like it" is not the way you get people to give something a second shot. It's obnoxious and pushy.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, you'd be surprised how many people who are convinced to try a second reading end up hopelessly hooked rabid fans who admit they should have read further.

the cutoff point is [s] wv: ascend, most agree. You read to that page, and if you aren't in, you are never going to be.

But granted, I haven't been trying very hard.

So?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're missing the point, though. The way you're going about trying to convince people to give it another shot is what's obnoxious. When I hear "you didn't watch enough episodes/read enough chapters/you did it wrong", I'm more likely to say "fuck off, asshole" than pick up whatever you wanted me to.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Lets be honest. You were never going back.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well duh. But I have to wonder how many people might've considered going back before being told "if you thought it was boring, you are the failure." And then decided "fuck off, asshole."
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
And if I thought there was a chance, I'd try harder.

But there wasn't so I didn't. Overall, Lulz ensued!

It's all coming up Noodle!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Defeating your own purpose is lulzy now? Wow, you're easily amused.

Guess that explains the affinity for Homestuck.

Ehh, I was bored at first but I continued because my friend told me there was stuff I enjoyed later on.

I don't normally try to get people to like things but if you want to be sold on it, I guess, you can name a thing that you enjoy and I'll tell you if Homestuck has it?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. I read about ten pages and was bored stiff with a headache from the colors. No thanks.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ok.

You don't really have to talk about how painful it is, though, when you say you're not interested. It's kind of annoying to me the same way insanenoodlyguy's pushiness is annoying to you.

Like you're on opposite ends of the annoying spectrum.

I got into it because my best friend recced it and told me it got better. She was right. After the third act it got good. By the time i finished the fourth, it was awesome. It's now my biggest fandom.

But that's me, and it's not for everyone. I don't blame people for not wanting to slog through the beginning, or for not liking it at all, etc.

Goddamit diet.

Why do you get haters so much easier then me?

I was pretty hesitant about reading it because all the Homestuck fans I know are insane, but I gave it a chance (on Noodlyguy's recommendation, of all things) and I'm really liking it. It's a very interestingly-told story with a lot of cool concepts executed in interesting ways, and it makes very good use of its medium. Which I'm kind of a sucker for.

I can see why some people don't like it or get bored with it quickly, though.

Not all of us are insane!

Well, ok, some of us are partly insane. But to tell you the truth, I fangirl hard about Homestuck on purpose, but am also capable of being really rational and reasonable about it. It's a huge fandom and you get all kinds.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ten pages was like, the first day. You read the first day of a webcomic.

I'm sorry but my comment stands. You didn't even fucking try.

The colors thing was at least a good reason. the visuals not being liked is a legit concern for something that's using the visual medium.

And You think you saw colors then... ho shit. He was just warming up

So? Even if it hadn't given me a headache (and nice job posting that image, I guess causing people physical pain is fun to you), if it bores me in ten pages, why should I bother continuing to read something when I'm zoning out and not even paying attention half the time because it's that damned boring?
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-11-15 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Because you can't expect a book to be hooking you 10 pages in. And this is more a book the anything.

If you have problems with simple colors, you should A: not be here because half these secrets must induce migraines, and B. Should have adjusted the color on your monitor and/or display a long, long time ago.

It's not that hard to do. It's your problem, not ours. You just were kinda stupid and didn't realize the solution.

Actually, you can expect a book to be hooking you in three pages. That's the average threshold you get for any book in a store before the average shopper puts it back on the shelf. And for editors, it's one paragraph. Ten pages is more than a little generous.

And I discovered a much better solution than fiddling with my monitor settings. It;s called "not reading Homestuck."
