I see that more as selfish than childish. I guess if you think the two mean the same then I can see what you are saying, but I see them as different terms.

It's childish because of the scale of situation itself. Selfishness could be small scale. Everyone is selfish at some point. Childishness is when that selfishness reflects "The world revolving around you" aspect.

Hm, interesting pov. I disagree but thank you for clarifying.

What if I were to argue that economic collapse was somehow best for the country and thus I was actually putting the whole before my own needs? Type of war time justification thinking - lots of deaths now lead to better lives for everyone later.

It's a line of reasoning I've seen used before, repeatedly in the military. Death today so that our loved ones may live tomorrow, and the like.
