YES, I posted a secret similar to this a pretty long time ago and people were just kind of thinking it was either cute or really stupid?

But I was convinced of this for so freaking long!

(I AM NOT ALONE BWHWAAUWHS)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...it doesn't?

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* We can start a club.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
me, too!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh I still don't know some of the abbreviations people use around here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you want to? (Honestly asking here, I can type some of them out if you want.)

Acronyms and their meanings

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
N!S: not!secret (usually something that the person would not be ashamed to admit to their grandmother/mother/fandom friends/RL friends)

S: secret (the... well, duh)

B!S: bonus!secret (it's not the point of the secret, but it's related and might make the original secret even more humiliating/un-share-able. basically 2-for-1)

S!B: secret!because (because... they feel like they're alone, their sexuality doesn't match, there's some particular aspect of the secret that makes it a secret - usually used when the secret could otherwise be said to be a popular opinion or at least not something that should be hidden for whatever reason.)

AYRT: Anon You Replied To. Used to distinguish between anonymous users (anons).

DA: Different Anon (than the one you replied to). Someone is butting in on the conversation.

SA: Same Anon. This is different than AYRT in that ayrt is meant to carry on a conversation, while SA is meant to fix something in the previous comment, usually when it's not immediately apparent that it's a typo. Like the canon/not canon person in the Doctor Who secret (17 I think).

And some extras:

OC: Original Character. Usually used to denote a character in fanfic that is not from canon.

OOC: Out-of-Character. This has two meanings. One is in fanfic, where if, say, the Joker professes his undying love for Batman and they ride off into the sunset (which is a great set-up for the Joker to do something awful, but...). If Batsy doesn't say a damn word in protest, that's OOC. (The Joker doing the undying-love thing, I could see, but only if the punchline was fantastic.) The other meaning is in RP (role-play), when the players are talking to each other out of character - they aren't acting. Both definitions go opposite....

IC: In-Character. If the Joker professes his undying love for Batman, and Batman immediately knocks him out, ties him up, leaves him on GCPD's doorstep and goes on the hunt for whatever plot the Joker's cooked up this time that requires him to say such things, that's IC. In RP, is means that you're speaking to the character, not the player, and you shouldn't be alarmed if the person suddenly says they want to play your bones like a fiddle.

TLDR (or variations thereof): Too Long, Didn't Read. If someone posts an essay like I'm doing now, the readers are likely to say "This was too long, I didn't read it." The phrase is now shorthand for, "Let me sum up what I've just said for all you lazy asses." It's often used in wall-o'-text secrets.

IRL: In Real Life, as in not on the internet or in fiction. Used more or less interchangeably with AFK (away from keyboard).

That's all I can think of. Anything I didn't get?

Not AYRT but that would be awesome!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
o_o;; what does it mean then?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's in the phrasing? Like, if someone is basically using fandom secrets to get up on their soap box and lecture people or to address a certain person/group, it usually gets tossed into the N!S pile. Which is why you learn to word your secrets carefully very fast. And then the rest are things that, yeah, aren't secrets because they're obvious.

I... thought it did mean that. Are we all crazy or is OP just trying to psych us out?
cloud_riven: Stick-man styled Apollo Justice wearing a Santa hat, and also holding a giant candy cane staff. (Default)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-11-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean the failbar, or when it's written into the secret?

Because I tend to use "not a secret: blah blah blah" when something is obvious, worn on my sleeve, etc.
But failbar stuff I just view as things not worded as secret opinions or views or whatever, but as total statements (eg: "this is thing IS sucky." "homestuck readers ARE pedos!" "this broseph is ttly fug/nice").

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I took it as when it's part of the secret - not failbar. Do I have that wrong? (Wouldn't be surprised if I did.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Failbar, I understood it inside of the secrets.

You're cute. I like you.

OP-I mean Not!Secret in the failbar

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I meant Not!Secret in the failbar, I forgot that people used it inside the secrets. I now know it means that the secret wasn't properly phrased. You have to make an "I statement" like "I feel", "I think", "I'm ashamed". My bad.

Or secret stories about yourself! Like someone who was inspired to become a lawyer because of Phoenix Wright, or got all their reading skills from fanfiction. Those are secrets too!

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2012-11-16 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Then what does it mean?!

I used to think that "SB" and "BS" were the owners of the community who would write their own comments on everyone's secrets lol! you're not the dumbest one here, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao, I bet that actually made some of the secrets more amusing.
