Let's put it this way, after the first seven or eight episodes of the Legend of Korra, I was picturing it going in a VERY different direction.

That direction would have involved actually going into the fact that nonbenders WERE discriminated against, the massive power abuses that characters like Tarrlok used, Korra realising that SHE had prejudices of her own that she needed to overcome, finding a way to airbend that didn't involve being angry and afraid because OH MY GOD THAT IS NOT HOW AIRBENDING WORKS, if she DID have to have her bending taken away, then actually learning something from it and gaining perspective on what it's like to be a nonbender, helping her gain valuable perspective and sitting down to work out the spiritual side of things to get it back instead of, "Oh, you're sad? HERE'S ALL YOUR BENDING BACK AND A BONUS AVATAR STATE!", and, preferably, Mako being frozen in an iceberg for a hundred years after Korra and Asami swap notes and realise he's being a grade A douchecanoe.

I had a lot of disappointed feelings about Korra, okay.

I'm still optimistic about the next season of Korra but I would've liked your version much better.

Particularly her losing her powers. I know they didn't know they were going to get a second season but what a waste of a really interesting plot!

The thing is, that part happens SO late in the last episode, it wouldn't have been too much to edit it. Hell, even just cut the episode and end it with Korra opening her eyes in the Avatar state - you could go back to the next season with her having unlocked the Avatar state but still needing to regain her bending and have it as an ongoing storyline, you could have her finding a way to restore it as a storyline, you cut the godawful cringeworthines of Makorra and just work that whole iffy storyline out properly... *sigh*

I'm pretty sure they didn't find out they were getting an additional season until episode the final episode was finished, so I think they would've been risking ending the show on a cliffhanger if they messed with it.

Makorra was an absolute mess, though. I wish they'd developed Mako better as a character. Aaaand not make it seem like Korra wasn't doing anything wrong by attempting to breakup a relationship because she likes a guy.

Well, rewriting it might have been too late. But just... chopping a bit off at the end? I mean, stuff gets edited late in the hour all the time...

And yeah - do things a bit better by poor Asami, too, who was basically introduced as Mako's love interest then pretty much dumped four episodes later. She's a kickarse character and I loved seeing her go from Daddy's rich little girl to bonafide badass who's come into her own and chosen her own path. Why couldn't Mako have actual character development?

(Or Bolin, for that matter! Poor kid got kicked to the curb, big time.)

Yeah that season finale was an excellent example of writers writing themselves into a corner and using a terrible deus ex machina to get out.

I still maintain it would have had far more potential if they had just cut the episode with Korra opening her eyes in the Avatar state.
