A lot of popular anime have generated vast amounts of idiotic fangirls who adore the shows for all the wrong reasons- and the most prominent of these are shows like Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist.
I don't think there's anything wrong with watching popular anime, but when that's ALL you watch and you start acting like you know everything there is to know about anime, etc... that's when you start annoying people. And that's why there are elitists who tell the single-minded Narutards to branch out.
Also, again I have to say that popularity doesn't always reflect worth. In my opinion it rarely does.
I'm kind of out of it too so this might have been confusing. Sorry. D: Basically: I agree that the nazi-elitism is a little overboard... but I also don't think they're always entirely wrong. I'm always happier to meet someone who likes SGT FROG than I am to meet someone who just watches Adult Swim for their anime fix.
