That is part of the problem!

The rest is that she's NEVER even in a scene with Dinky! They have ZERO interactions in the show. Dinky's always with other adults.

Even here Dinky is with some other pony in Sisterhoove Social whose coat could match Derpy's at a stretch - let alone looks old enough to be the same age as her!

It is just very frustrating trying to find fic when that bit of fanon appears in almost any decently-written Derpy fic.

If true, that sucks and is annoying but if it's just really popular... well that still sucks for OP but really, people can like what they want.

Dinky as Ditzy's daughter, Lyra as wannabe human, Bon-Bon as changeling infiltrator . . . Then again, it's not like this series explains much, given the short attention span of its target audience. (Even the omnipresent term "alicorn" to describe Celestia and Luna has never appeared in the show itself.)

OP was a little bit late to the party; I only joined the fandom a couple months ago (I only watched the show a couple months ago!). Given that, I don't really understand where a lot of this fanon stuff came from. The Lyra thing just puzzles me, I've never even heard the Bon-Bon one and what's with everypony deciding that Derpy is a postal worker??

I think it drives me wild because when I write, I try to write from what I see in the series proper, not what others think about the series. I don't play into fanon often, unless it's a fanon that makes sense to me -- And none of those do!

I'm a slightly irrationally happy whenever the show contradicts fanon (such as in Luna Eclipsed).

The term Alicorn it seems originated from one of the animators, although it looks like the canon term (although not adopted by the fandom AFICT) is either princess or pegasus unicorn.

Yes. The MLP will take any scrap of information and run with it until it's accepted by most of the fandom as canon. Tables are then flipped if the show ever contradicts the "canon."

It is, and when canon contradicts fanon, a lot of crap is going to be flung both ways. I can still remember the "Derpy talks" hoo-haa and the massive backlash it created both for and against the show. *shudders*

Aren't all the ponies essentially teenagers anyway? They're not little kids, like Apple Blossom, but the only "adult" pony we really have seen is Princess Celestia and her sisters and so forth, and they are distinctly different from the "mane" cast.

Nah, plenty of the ponies in the background are adults and have the same body shape/size as the main cast (the cakes, for instance). I agree that the main characters seem to be teenagers or young adults, but many people read them as being older.

No, I think the mane six are actually young adults. They all live on their own and they all have jobs (except Twilight who is sort of in the pony equivalent of grad school - that's how I think of her apprenticeship with Celestia anyway. And she still lives on her own). When their parents are shown, it's in the past, indicating that they used to live with their parents, but now they don't.

Actually, I guess AJ lives with her family - but that's because she's helping run a family farm and isn't she basically in charge of it now with her grandmother not really capable of running the show on her own anymore? That's a pretty adult responsibility.

But that's what's so fun about bg ponies. You make up what you want!! And since that is what the whole franchise is about (imagination!!), what's so wrong it it?

I find it cute adn we've got canon evidence that normal ponies can birth pegasai or unicorns, or vice versa.

And it's certainly better than most of the OTHER fanons for poor Dizzy Doo.

I only like this one and the mail carrier thing. Other than that, she'd a normal pony who has a lazy eye. *shrug* And is the best mom in the world to Dinky~

As far as this awful fandom's popular headcanons are, this one is honestly one of the least offensive/annoying/downright awful out there. I mean, we're talking about a fanbase where "Pinkie is secretly a serial killer" is actually popular fanon.

Compared to that this one isn't a big deal, and honestly pretty cute. Just let people have fun.

I hate it too, though not as much as I hate most of the other fanon surrounding poor Ditzy Doo. I would be so happy if they showed that unicorn filly with different parents in canon.

I /heard/ there was going to be a "Derpy" episode this season. If there really is a Ditzy Doo episode I hope it says she's an online child/no family
