Agreed. One isn't ~less creative~ for writing fan fiction over original fiction, in my opinion.

However, I do have to say that I do NOT like the trend of "I wrote a fic for X fandom and changed the names so now it's original fiction~". If all you need to do is interchange names, then to be honest, your characterization must be shitty, because the odds of two different people reacting the same to situations is highly unlikely. :|

That said, I'm at 15k and very behind in NaNo, because I am leading up to a super sad part and I know it's going to kill me to write. XD And I hate writing 'out of order', so I can't just skip past it and come back.

If all you're doing is changing names, then yeah, that's bad. If you're changing personalities and genders and combining two characters into one or splitting one character into two, that becomes a different animal, IMO.

Oh I agree. There's a difference between taking a fic IDEA and moving further with it and expanding on it by changing the characters/etc, but in that process I would also hope that the new characters' reactions to things would differ as well, especially if it was something emotionally heavy where not everyone's going to react the same.

I've often taken one idea or 'plot point' and looked at it from the point of view of several different sets of characters, just to see how they'd react to that situation. If they all reacted the same though, I'd consider it bad writing on my part.

In principle, yes, but it's not uncommon that when you start writing a fic things start to change as you write and maybe you've set out to write a fanfic (obviously this mostly applies to AUs), but what you have is an original with fandom names.

I generally don't read fanfics which change characters' names to better suit the AU. I feel it's crossing over into original territory (and I'm easily distracted).

Word on writing out of order! I can't do that to save my life and it's killing me presently. x____X
