i don't think that having standards is necessarily a bad thing. but the rules you mentioned are rather arbitrary and don't suggest that you have "high standards"--instead they give the impression that you're pedantic about trivialities.

a better way of gauging the quality of a fic would probably be to read the first few paragraphs and figuring out whether or not you like your first impression........

Pretty much this. If you won't read a fic because it says 'by: (authors name)' then frankly - you're a bit of a twit.
