When I go looking for a fic to read in whatever fandom, I look for an interesting summary and which characters are featured. Word count only tends to matter to me if it is a really long fic – because that takes more of a time commitment, so sometimes I will have to save it for later. If a fic has a rather bland summary, but everyone and their sister is recommending it, I will give it a chance. If I really like an author’s work, I will probably try a fic even if I don’t like the summary at all. It’s pretty easy to read a few paragraphs and decide whether to keep reading and if I decide not to, well, I’ve only wasted a couple of minutes. But that’s me. I don’t expect other people to use my criteria.

What I can’t figure out is if you were looking for agreement or disagreement. Because how you choose to pick your fic really isn’t anybody’s business but your own. Maybe some think you’re missing out, which could be true, but maybe you wouldn’t enjoy any fic that didn’t fit you’re criteria. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide – is this something that you are unhappy about? If so, maybe you should try to change it. It isn’t always easy to change behaviors, but it can be done.
