Uhh. I'm not upset. If I was upset, I'd have made more than a two line comment.

...Do I actually have an FS comment stalker? I'm a little flattered.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
But if you weren't upset, then you wouldn't have expounded upon your feelings in both this and another comment.

But you did.

NaNo gets to you. Who knows why, but it does. And you want to pretend that it doesn't while whining about it.

Or...I could be replying to things that interest me?

Me commenting about something doesn't make me 'upset' about that thing. It means I thought of a comment to post.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
But you decrying the thing that you're commenting about indicates...what emotion, exactly? Are you happy? I wouldn't think so. Are you sad? I also wouldn't think so. What could you possibly be? How does "upset" not fit the bill?

Indicates...that I don't like it? I don't have to be upset about something to dislike it. I dislike Severus Snape, but I'm not upset about his existence as a character in Harry Potter. I dislike Batman, but I'm not upset it exists.

haha don't you love complete strangers who obviously know your own motives for writing comments way better than you do?

You're obviously upset. Just accept it. You're in denial.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
They hate this particular thing that other people do enough to slam people who do it. Explain how that does not qualify as "upset."

I'm not 'slamming' people who do it. I'm saying it's everywhere and I'm sick of seeing it taking over half the net for a whole month-and-then-some, and that I don't believe high word counts equal good writing.

I'm commenting here because...that's what F!S is for? Commenting?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sick of seeing something doesn't qualify as "upset?" That's interesting. I thought it did.

Also, NaNo doesn't claim that high word count equals good writing. In fact, it claims the exact opposite. The goal is to create a first draft, and to then edit the shit out of it.

No? I'm not sure when it did. An 'ugh' reaction is not the same as a 'RAWRR' reaction.

The writing blogs say that. I know they do. But that's not the attitude I seem to see coming off a lot of people. I realize that could qualify as 'only sick of people doing it wrong' but that literally seems to be 90% of what I see about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're hanging around the wrong people. The people I see doing it either don't care too much whether they hit the baseline or are shooting for something greater than the baseline and exalting at every point.

Shitty people are shitty people. Sometimes, shitty people do things like NaNo and use it as justification to be shitty people. It doesn't mean that NaNo, or the things like NaNo, are themselves shitty.

I probably am. I think Tumblr might have something to do with it.

I've always disagreed with the word count thing even before I knew NaNo though, because I do RPing a fair bit and people who write really long posts get very, very smug about it sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's not cool. Length does not necessarily correspond to the value of a work. It's only important, I should think, in terms of classification (i.e. is this a short story, a novella, or a novel).

NaNo is useful, I think, for people who sincerely want to be able to write beyond the "short story" classification, but who are having trouble revving their engines. It's hard to cultivate that kind of stamina. A friendly competition can be helpful.

[personal profile] maverickz3r0 2012-11-18 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's generally how I think about it. Particularly when I've seen people who do that usually using over-describing things to pad out their word counts. Purple prose or near it. Seems it's the smuggest ones who do that.

I guess. I don't really think it'd help me since it'd be more likely to just make me constantly neurotic, and I'm neurotic enough about my writing as it is. If people want to do it...whatever. But I do wish there was a little less hype over it.

Uh, where did they slam anybody?

I know right. Obviously they can read my mind and also know what I had for dinner.

Clearly I am! I mean, why else would I be commenting? People only ever reply to things they're upset about!

Jeez, don't get upset about it!

;P fwiw, you didn't seem upset to me.

Thanks. I'm not sure how I usually come across in text, it's a bit difficult for me to gauge sometimes.

You seemed mildly irritated, at the most. Anon's reaction seemed excessive.

Clearly you are weeping over your keyboard, smashing bloodied fingers into its shattered keys, and for what? Certainly not a 50000 word novella, that's for damn sure.

Anon knows. Don't deny.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Great visuals. You have created them.

Clearly! I couldn't possibly be mostly paying attention to the season Red vs Blue I'm watching. I must be tragically upset that these anons know me so well.
