Yeah you're basically getting me.

Although I've been in a lot of groups where I admitted not to knowing something and people don't make fun. They tell me about it or recommend stuff.

It just seems like people skim the worst parts of "geek" fandoms off the surface and put them up as what it is always like and it's just not true. Even in the shitholes of the internet like 4chan they make huge character req lists * and will usually link you to if for free if you're into pirating. Once you filter out the trolls they're generally good people who love comics.

It just feels like a lot of the barriers are put in place by people who don't read comics telling other people how terrible they arethe fans are and it's sad to me.

Yeah, hearing people go on and on about how awful comics fans are is really disheartening. Especially since, like you said, while there are trolls and assholes out there, there are a lot of really awesome people, too. Funnily enough, I actually spend a fair amount of time on /co/, because I've found that there are a lot of really good discussions there, and the trolls really aren't as numerous as people think. 4chan in general is actually a really great place to find things, too (barring a few boards like /b/ that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole). It's where I've found out about a lot of comics and comic-related news, since I don't really have many rl friends into them and my LCS is kind of craptacular, and there are even several titles that I've started reading because people storytimed them there.

I think a big part of the problem is that with a new fandom, it's always a bit overwhelming trying to hunt down all the good places to have discussions and find things (esp if you're going it alone and don't already have any friends in that fandom), and with comics fandom it's kind of doubly so. Partially because of the reps some places like 4chan have gotten and also partially just due to the sheer size of comics canon. I'm lucky in that I have several friends who are really into comics and have been willing to point me in the right direction (and even lend me boxes full of comics, in one case, when I was first getting into X-Men after the first movie came out). Not everyone is that lucky, though, and I think some people are just intimidated by that and afraid to try. Which I don't blame them for at all.

Hopefully one of these days all of the non-asshole comic geeks will be able to band together and drown out all the overly-loud assholes and trolls. Comics fandom definitely has its issues, and you do still have to deal with some stupid crap if you're a woman or racial minority or queer, but at the heart of it there are a lot of awesome people who want to share and talk about the characters and series that they love. The assholes and trolls might be really loud, but they are dwindling in numbers, and the fact that more people seem less willing to put up with their crap is hopeful. We've still got our fair share of Tony Harrises around, but we've also got even more people there willing to tell them to stop being assholes. Hopefully in the future some of the existing fans that are bad about pulling the "real" vs "fake" fan stuff will learn to take it down a notch, too, and just accept that someone being a different type of fan isn't necessarily a bad thing. (Especially since more fans generally = more money = the ability to put out more stuff.)

And it would also be nice if Marvel and DC got their shit together as well and stopped making things even more messy with every subsequent failure of a reboot or gimmick (esp you, Marvel. Sweet Zombie Jesus, you do not need to have a new event every year), but that's another dream for another day, I suppose. Sigh.

My /Co/mrade!

Anyway. They had a thread about Tony Harris the first day it blew up and it was surprisingly reasonable. I guess I still have my moments assuming this is 4chan everyone supposed to be butts. Then they deleted the thread because the mods hate discussion. boo.

Most the jerks though I just assume are being jerks because they can. Even if they are assholes who cares. They're some person online probably hundreds of miles away. Call me a newb. I've been on this site for at least 5 years. Only newbs still think we call each other newbs here.
