Yeah, I think it was a case of "seeing what you want to see". The BBC fandom had thoroughly made an ass of itself by spewing all sorts of hateful bile at the show (before the first episode even aired!). So perhaps the desire to have the "good show", the show that did everything right as a rebuttal went a bit too far there?

Because, yeah, the way some of fandom talked about JLM Holmes did trend towards the dreaded "woobification" and IMO wasn't really reflected in what was going on in the show. So I see what's happening now more as a self-correction in the fandom, as seeing the character as he is and not as this OOC fanfic woobie construct.
