*Hemhem* This only proves your point but the plural of virus is not viri (which is the plural of vir - man)

Heh, thanks for the correction, and yes, as embarrassing as it is to have become an object lesson, myself, well, my point is made. v_v;

I'm lucky I didn't know the technical terms for the declensions in English and decided to do a quick fact check while I was looking them up, or my "correction" would have been wrong. So no need to be embarrassed :).

Now if anybody could explain to me where the German plural of Virus (Viren) came from...

Huh. This one's weird. If it's a noun that adds -n/-en for pluralization, the plural should be virusen not viren.

Ask people on [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles?

Not really, because it's a loanword so usually the rules of the source language would apply (although we're really not consistent with that). The "regular" German plural would be "Virusse" (which is sometimes used but sounds very ... unsophisticated).

But I'm not invested enough right now to figure that one out, especially since the answer is probably: "For some reason enough people agreed that this was the correct form and that's why." Just like the process of deciding which grammatical gender a loanword from a language without grammatical genders should get is surprisingly random and can cause long and heated discussions.

I think the takeaway from this conversation is that Latin is a pain in the tuchus. >_>
