Huh. I kind of thought that was what "Bandom" was defined as. That weird group of Panic! etc.

I never knew there was a definition of "Bandom." I thought it just meant rock bands in general. But I never labeled my fics that way so maybe that's why nobody ever complained.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it makes sense that it would be all bands in general but for some reason I just thought it was a specific term to a small group of bands. I don't even know why I assumed that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a huge kerfuffle about it in, like, 2008 or so? Back when all the bands were still together and the fandom was still pretty new. People were fighting like crazy over which fandoms count as bandom and if using 'bandom' to mean just six-degrees-of-Decaydance stuff was disrespecting Guns'n'roses slashers and I don't know what all. IIRC the-Laura-Hale-who-has-sadly-not-yet-been-killed-by-werewolves was in the middle of it, busily stirring shit, and it also got all mixed up with OTW wank?

Anyway yeah, there was a period of time when this mattered A LOT because of REASONS, and I for one am very happy that nobody really cares anymore.

FOB, Panic, The Cab...hell I miss all of it ;-; I used to be way into all of it (particularly Panic! at the Disco, hence the name)

My brief bandom days flashed before my eyes reading this.

Pete Wentz is a cock.

...has a cock? I remember hearing something about cocks.

Which one is Pete Wentz again?

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-11-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
He's the one with the cock, is what I hear.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So there is definitely a cock involved... hmm. Perhaps I shall investigate this Pete Wentz phenomena further.

All I know is the secret gave me a mental image of Wentz deciding which bands could be in bandom and then having to knight the members with his cock.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
That was a trope in bandom fic for awhile. Pete Wentz evaluated people for his record label using his cock. If Pete Wentz hadn't favored you with a fuck your band wasn't really in bandom.

(why do I remember all this stuff? I was never even in the fandom, I just read the porn.)

I'm in fandom for other bands and um...yeah? I thought this was the consensus? Bandom is for all the FBR and related people, and fandoms for other bands and groups of musicians have other names.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
That was pretty much how it ended up playing out, with very few exceptions.

As I remember the only people who were really in any serious contention were the tryhard Long Island shippers (TBS/Everything that Jesse Lacey touches, which is ancillarily related to My Chem but emphatically not to Decaydance) who HATED that those GAY FUCKS were getting involved in their HARDCOOOORE PUNK FICTIONS or something.

I mostly just avoided anyone who got angry about the definition like the plague and my time was pretty okay. Although come to think, I think there was a minor kerfluffle or two about why My Chem counted as bandom when there was a huge influx of people who post-dated the Summer of Like, but it eventually calmed down. As much as anything in that goddamn fandom was ever calm.

I think I need a drink.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not 2008 and the word is being used by people who were never involved in Decaydance-related fandoms. The name makes sense: band + fandom= bandom. It's very possible TH and others made the same connection and weren't stealing from Decaydance-based fandoms. No point in getting snippy just because a couple of dying fandoms want to keep a name that's not even necessarily ripped off of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. Urban dictionary says bandom means: The band fandom. Most commonly used when referring to the slash-friendly fandom of "emo" bands, including decaydance bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, The Academy Is... etc.

Tokio Hotel totally counts. In a way.

Except this is the dumbest definition. Fandom for a band = bandom. Why limit it to certain emo bands? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Why? It's a portmanteau of band and fandom. Not exactly a narrow description.

I had no idea that "bandom" was associated with particular bands. I always just saw it as a portmanteau of "band" and "fandom."
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-11-19 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I learned something today I guess. And by "learn", I mean I want to promptly forget it, because that prior assumption makes a hell of a lot more sense.
