Older Lesbian Romance Recs?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone recommend any good books, shows, movies, whatever where a lesbian romance with older characters is actually canon?

"Older" is a relative term, but I guess I mean characters who are old/mature enough that their whole lives aren't up in the air. And where the lesbian storyline isn't just for the sake of two hot women. (Something like Adama/Roslin but with women, you know?)

I love fic, but I've kind of hit breaking point on never having a canon ship :( There must be something somewhere.

I'm almost certain that Lark and Rosethorn in the Circle of Magic were canon. It was ages ago when I read it, though, and they really aren't the focus of the book.

This is veeeerrrrry small, but the Doctor Who episode "Gridlock" features an elderly married lesbian couple as supporting characters.

Thanks for the rec! I don't watch DW, so I will check this out. Is any of their plotline in the ep about their relationship/romance, or no?

Not really, unfortunately, but they are non-action badasses and their scenes are cute and I was kind of impressed that they even existed.

My fandoms are mainly genres that leave me sort of progressivism-starved, so I'm a bit too easily pleased.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe? They're not really old in the beginning - in fact, one is a teenager - but they get older in course of the events.

And it's a pretty good work, IMO. At the very least it is absorbing and it has good language.

Yeah, read Fried Green Tomatoes. Awesome book.

I remember at least two Hercule Poirot movie/live-action adaptations that had older lesbian characters, but I can't remember the names or enough of the plots to look them up, sorry.

If you're willing to dig through fanfiction for a cartoon, Kim Possible's biggest or second biggest pairing (I never did find out which one truly won out), was the titular character and her arch-nemesis, Shego. Many fanfics are set years after the series took place so both characters are adults, and although there is definitely some "lesbians are hawt!" crap, there are some... well, if not good, at least decent stories featuring romance, adventure, struggle, and so on. (I want to say they were good for fanfiction standards, but it's been so many years since I read those fanfics so they might not have been as great as I remember them!)

There are many in fanfiction.net and in other archives. Just google "kigo fanfiction".

Thanks a million. I will definitely keep it in mind, as a new active fandom to get into is always awesome for femslash.

I'm guessing it's shipping against canon as well though, right? Not that that's such a big deal if there are great fics.

But I'm just - in the whole vista of our romance-centric culture, I can't believe no professional has ever done a love story for older women??

Re: Older Lesbian Romance Recs?

It's not very active, actually, since the cartoon ended, but there are really big archives for the pairing, which is why I brought it up.

It wasn't canon, but fans often wondered if the writers knew about the shipping, because the last season got some moments that were a little on the teasing side, compared to the previous seasons, and there was even one episode where the two characters got on friendly terms due to plot shenanigans.

" I can't believe no professional has ever done a love story for older women??"

I'm sure it's out there, but my guess is that the people pulling the cranks in the big media machine don't want to take the plunge promoting those because blah blah blah heteronormative demographics blah blah blah must not alienate blah blah blah.

With how many books are published every year, there have to be some out there, right? And there have to be movies and such out there too, that see very small releases. :(

Kim/Shego is not canon, but they have a LOT of onscreen moments together and it's pretty easy to read as subtext.

I've read several lesbian romance novels with older couples in. One was called Roller Coaster by Karin Kallimaker and they were well into their 40s at least. I can't recall the rest.

Mistress of Dragons has a canon romance between adult women, and it's not just for the sake of hotness... but I don't know that I could recommend it because it also has all kinds of horrible crap (rape, love potion dubcon, death in/by childbirth) happen to them for the sake of drama and to set up the two sequels.

The newest series of Upstairs, Downstairs (series 2 of the reboot). Alex Kingston and Emilia Fox play a lesbian couple in the 1930s.

Not the OP, but do you happen to have a link (preferably for series 1 of the reboot) that works outside the UK and US?

I did not know this!

I knew a writer who had some pretty epic stories: D. Jordan Redhawk. Her book Tiopa Te Lakota was great. She had another that stands out for me: Warlord Metal.

Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult. I have a few problems with it, but the romance between the two women was very well done.

Rita Mae Brown has a couple - Rubyfruit Jungle and Venus Envy. Rubyfruit Jungle is a better book imo, but it's more about the character's whole life story. Venus Envy is about a woman coming out later in life (after a near-death experience). Both books have some weird kinky stuff.

And of course, Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel. I recommend getting the Essential, since it contains most of the comics.

Exes and Ohs is a cute TV-show with a couple of short seasons, about a group of 30-something lesbians and bi women. You can find the DVDs for pretty cheap.

Last edit I swear, but also the movie Fire. It's about two sisters-in-law who fall in love.

Slonczewski's Elysium Cycle comes to mind. Although not "older" Sawyer has a good one in this WWW trilogy. Rusch's Diving into the Wreck series has a lesbian couple in minor roles, although they kinda vanish in the second book of the series.
