Really? Jesus, what bullshit. I automatically lose a measure of respect for writers who make sweeping generalizations about writing like that.

Like Joss Whedon (who I actually do like a lot of things about) saying "Happy people make for boring television." Um, no, people being happy all the time usually make for boring television. Happy people, period, only make for boring television if you're a lazy, uncreative hack who can't mine complexity and meaning out of the human condition unless your characters are being jerked around and handed problems by external forces (including "acting OOC because the writers said so" under "external forces", btw).

That right there is my biggest issue with Joss. I personally think it's a lot easier to write tragedy than it is to write happy people and happy stories. He uses that as an excuse for either his laziness or lack of talent or personal issues with happiness or all of the above.

Except a lot of his characters (at least on Firefly, the one I know best) really are happy people. Kaylee and Wash are great examples of generally happy people with relatively few worries. Jayne's a happy guy with questionable morals. Inara and Zoe are usually pretty optimistic as well, despite the shit they go through. And Book, after seeing all the things he's seen, still has so much faith in people and religion, which... to be honest, I'd also classify as "happy person".

Really, the only characters I'd consider truly unhappy on that show are Mal, Simon, and River.

Yeah, but when he got the chance for an end game where did he go? To misery land full of death and despair. And did you hear what the plans down the road for Inara were? Hint: it wasn't happy.

He may be able to write happy people but he cannot write happy stories.

Yeahhhhhhh...sorry, ignorant!anon who also also replied below. We are DEFINITELY not talking about Firefly. We're talking about Buffy, Angel, and Dollhouse.

People who complain about Firefly getting cancelled make me laugh. Getting canceled is the best thing that ever happen to Firefly, because it meant that Joss didn't get a chance to fuck everyone over and make them miserable and unlikable. Only got to fuck over half of them.

Yeah... Joss Whedon. I like some of his stuff, but I hate some of the shit he pointlessly puts his character through for the sake of "drama".

I had never heard of that quote from Joss, but it sure sounds like something he would say. And as much as I like his work...god do I have a problem with his 'everyone must be fucked over as much as humanly possible' shit.

That's weird coming from Joss, considering some of his characters really are "happy people". There's this idea that every character he creates is fucked up and depressed but... look at Kaylee! She's the definition of "happy people". Jayne too--he's not a great person, but he's pretty much happy most of the time. Wash, too... happy guy.

So... even if he said it, doesn't really reflect in his work? At least in Firefly.

But that's exactly it, isn't it? In Firefly, he got only 14 episodes and a movie, in Firefly, he didn't have enough time to fuck over everyone's happiness because he got forcibly cut off.

And yet he still managed to off Book and Wash (and by extension that Wash/Zoe relationship) in order to do a number on everyone's happiness for a last hurrah.
