this is bullshit.

I agree. There are a few people who have issues, and some of them are loud. Whenever they start ranting, though, what usually happens is that a whole lot of other writers come around telling them to kindly STFU. People who make out as if every writer is a shark waiting for blood in the water, irritate me.

If you don't want to leave feedback, that's okay. You don't owe me anything. But if you're going to talk about why you don't comment, own it, instead of blaming me because I'm probably one of ~them.

I used to leave epic-length reviews on fics I liked, up until a few years ago when responses to said reviews started getting weird. The culture has changed, and it's become a lot harder to gauge what kind of commentary is welcome.

The public meltdown writers you mention aren't the only ones putting people off. The "no crit ever, even a mild one-liner that might not actually even be negative amongst three paragraphs of obvious gushing" types might not post anything directly, but they're everywhere off in other corners of a fandom whining about how one "bad" review killed their self esteem. (These types never, ever warn for "no crit", either.) Hell, people are even getting cranky now if you try to actually DISCUSS aspects of the story, or make predictions, or interact in any way other than just fawning praise.
