Evangelion 3.0 sounds like a big hot mess

This is disappointing to hear.

Then again, I never was nearly as into Rebuild as a lot of people seemed to be.

The hilarious brokenness of the characters was part of the attraction, and they really defanged that in the remake.

Any spoiler free explanation of what they seem to have messed up?

I've never been a big fan myself, but, you know, it's Eva.
I haven't seen it myself, but apparently a lot of people found it really confusing and weren't pleased with some of the developments (I don't think I can explain without spoiling anything, sorry). If you do want some spoilers, there's a pretty thorough summary here: http://pastebin.com/HZ9zuatD

Everyone shits on the original EVA for being so moody and weird, but that was exactly why I liked it so much. I like moody and weird shit. It felt like a project that the creators genuinely did have a lot of feelings invested in.

All these remakes... feel kind of hollow, really. If I really want to be cynical, I'd say they're hollow cash-ins.

This, so much. I'm not the biggest Eva fan, but I get that Anno had a point in making it the way he did. Changing that seems wrong; like remaking Grave of the Fireflies and having the kids survive.

Pretty much.

Evangelion wasn't as perfect or unique as some people liked to suggest - but it did have a real driving force behind it's creation and a thematic aim to achieve. It stood out for that, and in many ways it succeeded as much as it failed.

The remake lacks that. Hollow is the perfect description. It's borrowing the aesthetics of the original, without understanding what it was that attracted people to it.

Evangelion 3.0 got me shipping Kaworu/Shinji after 15 years of Shinji/Asuka.
