Recent fandom disappointments?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
We all have old fandoms whose canons got screwed up which we're still disappointed about, but how about fandoms that recently screwed up (lets say since the past year-and-a-half, for the sake of standard TV scheduling)? What disappointments and idiotic canon developments have happened since then?

Did they ruin the fandom for you or make you leave it, or are you still in the fandom, either because you still love it anyway or because you hope it'll get better? Are the canons still unfinished (more movies/seasons/issues coming out) or is it complete? Does that make it better or worse (dreading more shitty developments vs hoping things will get fixed)?

SVU. Not necessarily because Stabler left, but because of how they handled it. They pretty much turned the E/O ship into canon unrequited love on Olivia's part, and turned Elliot into a huge dick who can't pick up the phone. I get that Meloni wasn't interested in coming back, and I'm certainly not one of the fans who thinks he ~owes it to us~ or some such bullshit, but ffs there are plenty of ways to write out the character without having the actor present. Having Elliot just stop speaking to Olivia after 12 years of partnership was lazy writing.

The show is still going, but I don't think there's any way to undo the damage as far as Stabler's exit goes. The best I can hope for is that they just never mention it again because every time it gets brought up they seem to dig themselves even deeper.

Oh, my 13/14/15-year-old self's heart is hurting right now. I was obsessed with SVU back then and a huge EO shipper, but I just lost interest when I discovered some other shows and my television preferences changed. This is the first update I've had other than knowing Stabler left. I think I'm glad I stopped being invested in their partnership (platonic or romantic) a long time ago now. :-/

Yeah, the cutting her off after everything they went through, and even saying their give each other their kidneys was ... in poor taste.

And not only that, but her character has been destroyed. I stopped watching for a few episodes. I watched the most recent one, and what I saw on screen was this timid woman that bore no resemblance to the Olivia I had known.

Pretty much everything Bioware's done since Dragon Age 2 came out. I mean, I actually liked DA2, but they've been doing REALLY horribly since then and it's been really, really frustrating and disappointing to watch.

I'm hoping they're back on track now. They seem like they're trying with DA3, but only time will tell if it's genuine or just marketing speak...

I agree with this, but I have no faith that they are getting "back on track."

Oh my God, this is well-timed!

I just saw the Pandora Hearts 79 RAW today and I don't like how the author is jerking me around. Basically the heroine, who died protecting the hero, has been in some strange looped incarnation and when the hero finally realized everything, and realized that he could send her off to this abyssal dimension to sit with her sister who is the queen there just with his word (because it was his will that was keeping her chained to their world) he DID, even with her pleading him not to because he has severe abandonment issues and plays the noble attachment-free hero to make up for it and he didn't want her hurt again and guh.

She's going to punch him the next time she sees him, and the author makes it clear that his self-sacrifice is just self-satisfaction and he hurt her by doing that but but

The past two chapters have had him in heavy moments with his best friend, and I love that too, I loooove the best friend's new character developments so much --I love all of the main trio and the author is constantly making it clear how they're destined to be a threesome forever, doomed or not, but it's like the two boys forgot about the girl WHO SUDDENLY DISAPPEARED IN FRONT OF THEIR EYES. And it's just... saddening. I hope this is remedied soon, and I have faith in this author but still. Already this heroine gets excluded from them in fan theory and fics, though she's extremely pivotal to the plot (without being important for no real reason or over-lauded like a LOT of heroines I find are) and the boys have a long friendship, though I suppose she has known both of them individually since the beginning of everything.

They've just come a long way --the hero best friend used to hate her, see her as someone harming the hero due to the contract between them, and almost killed her at one point, and slowly grew to see her as a friend. And she used to always torment him until he patted her head and she began craving his affections... she's like that. I just really really want her back soon and have both boys make this up to her, they owe her.

They still haven't mentioned her once yet. x_x I want my beloved trio to make up all the way soooon.

I expect them to welcome her back with a hug.

I hope I don't have to wait much longer. I hope it's done in a satisfying way because it's not as if this manga's plot doesn't go BDSM over my heart again and again as it is.

I will never stop WTFing @ the recent season of Doctor Who. There's convoluted plots, and then there's whatever the fuck has been going on over there for the past couple years.

I haven't seen series 7 yet, but I spent almost every episode of series 6 whimpering "what" every ten minutes.

Uh oh :(

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished season 5 and now I'm a little afraid to start season 6 because of all the times I've heard people complain about it. :(

Can someone please give me a vague idea of what type of crappiness happened in a non-spoilery manner so I know what to expect? I just want to know if Amy and Rory stay together exactly what kinds of flaws they were, because I can roll with some kinds better than others.

MTE. I've almost given up on Doctor Who, which is sad because I loved it so much. But yeah, still shaking my head at season 6, and might not watch it until Moffat leaves (except for the Neil Gaiman episode).

i recently watched the latest episode of supernatural after having not watched it for several months. i didn't want to skip ahead but i was interested in where the story was heading, having read up on the plot in season 6 and 7, which i've yet to watch.

and it was so horrible???? like compared to the quality and general atmosphere of any given episode from earlier seasons, supernatural has gone way downhill. i was really disappointed with the acting too, which surprised me since i wasn't expecting that to change. maybe i just watched a shitty episode, but it was still painful.

In Plain Sight.

The writers suckered us into thinking that Mary/Marshall had a chance, then destroyed it in the series finale.

How I Met Your Mother. The first half of season 7 (up to Symphony of Illumination) was so amazing I thought it was going to turn around all the mediocrity of seasons 5 and 6 and make the show brilliant again.

Then the second half of season 7 happened. Ha ha ha. Ha. Haaaaahh....

Tamora Pierce's latest books. I loved Evvy in SM, but she was so bland in Melting Stones. :( Idk, for a book with both Evvy and Rosethorn (two badass characters), I remember it as being quite a disappointment. I hope Battle Magic is as intense as those parts of WoTE were. *crosses fingers*

Also, yeah, Bloodhound... didn't work for me. Just didn't interest me, I guess. It seemed very slow, after Terrier. I don't want to read Mastiff, and that makes me sad, because Tamora Pierce, dammit.

So, I'm the anon who complained the other day in a similar thread about Mass Effect 3's ending. I was on my phone and too lazy to log in, but yeah.

Again, I won't get into the ending itself. But for how it changed my interactions with the fandom - I was put off by all the ending wank and 'RETAKE ME3' and all that crap at first moreso than the ending itself. But it seems like by sticking around after it died down with those who didn't totally jump ship, I got closer to the fandom and I don't/haven't participated in a lot of fandoms. (Hell, it even got me reading fic again.)

Momoiro Clover Z, man. (I realize I'm the only one here who cares, lol).

I love them, and they've been my favorite idol group for a couple of years (since early 2010 when they made their major debut). However, lately a bunch of their singles have lacked the spark that made me love them in the first place, and all their concerts are at huge arenas. I want them to be popular, but one of the biggest things that made MomoClo unique was how they felt like a very personal group, something that's kind of been lost recently.

The latest performances of their new song, Saraba Itoshiki Kanashimitachi yo don't have the energy they used to in it, and the choreography feels kind of lazy. It's a pity, because while I like the song well enough (better than their last single, Otome Sensou), it's just not fun to watch.

I'm hanging on, trying to be a good fan, but I'm this close to 100% jumping ship.
cloud_riven: Stick-man styled Apollo Justice wearing a Santa hat, and also holding a giant candy cane staff. (Apollo Justice is pretty awesome)

Haven't left these fandoms, or dropped the source material, but:

- Don't know if it's idiotic, but I'm sure as hell disappointed that Capcom basically dropped Apollo Justice. If I go back in a time machine to when that game came out, I was already disappointed that the game wasn't even about the titular character. And seeing how there's been zero mention of Apollo since, although there were references to things like the Gavinners in the Edgeworth games, I'm pretty bummed.

- Britta. Community. I'm fine with a lot of her humour being slapstick, and how she's a cool subversion of the straight man, but I'm not so fine with a lot of the mean-spirited "Way to Britta ___" that felt over-the-top in s3. Especially since the show seems to be going for Troy/Britta lately, and all that comes to mind is Troy being a ridiculous asshole to her. Maybe that's just what happens when you have a lot of writers I guess idk. I'm mostly wondering if Harmon's leaving will affect it for better or worse (considering flawed and not completely competent Abed is basically him reminding the writers that Abed isn't deus ex machina).

- I want to say Adventure Time's start of the current season, but it's probably too early to judge where it's going. Spoilers is that I liked less exposition.

Young Justice: Invasion. What happened to my beloved team? All the camaraderie, closeness, fun, and growth from the first season is gone, replaced with a bunch of former friends who've drifted apart and clueless newbies who are harder to get a handle on because there's so many of them and there's barely enough time to develop them individually. In some ways it's still really epic, but the stuff that's good could have been there anyway while we got to see the team's drastic changes as they happened, instead of the rushed timeskip bullshit we have now.

Also, the treatment of Kaldur's character almost makes me wish I'd picked anyone else for a favorite. But I can't help that he's amazing and deserves better than this. Especially better than "Before The Dawn", damn it.

NCIS. I was already tired of the Tony/Gibbs/Ziva show, but the final gave me some hope, with everyone in danger.

I thought the lack of McGee in the promos was for suspense, but after seeing how they dealt with his wound, I guess it's because they really don't care about him.

I'm apparently the kind of fan who watch for one character, but I don't want to watch more special arcs/episode for the same three while the rest of the cast get one episode only.

I'll just watch the gif sets.
