So, I'm the anon who complained the other day in a similar thread about Mass Effect 3's ending. I was on my phone and too lazy to log in, but yeah.

Again, I won't get into the ending itself. But for how it changed my interactions with the fandom - I was put off by all the ending wank and 'RETAKE ME3' and all that crap at first moreso than the ending itself. But it seems like by sticking around after it died down with those who didn't totally jump ship, I got closer to the fandom and I don't/haven't participated in a lot of fandoms. (Hell, it even got me reading fic again.)

I actually liked some of the discussion after ME3 because it was nice to know that there were other people just as upset as I was. And I was really upset. I couldn't think of Mass Effect for months without feeling incredibly bitter and unhappy, and while I realize that's probably a massive overreaction, I couldn't control it. So while I agree that a lot of people were way too harsh to BioWare employees (and make the fandom look awful, arg), I still got something out of it.

I still have major problems with the ending but I love these games and I've lost a great deal of my anger over it.

Why can't I write out a reply without my computer getting cranky? Ugh.

Oh I liked the discussions to be sure. It helped to talk about the endings online and with friends right after I beat ME3 to make sense of the endings and why they were so disappointing. I think it's totally fair to be upset over it for a while, but the way some people reacted was.. yeah, embarrassing for the rest of the fans. :P

But yeah, that's what I was getting at. Due to the crappy endings I got (and still get) something good out of the ME fandom.. even though they had a lot of bad to give for a while, too. :P

Ah, so you weren't very involved in the fandom before ME3? That makes sense. Although I had read the occasional fic and browsed the Social forums (an...interesting place to be after ME3, to put it mildly), I actually read much more fic after ME3 than before. Some of them were 'fixes' for the ending, plenty of them weren't, but I can see how the uproar would draw you to other sane like-minded fans and how through that you could incorporate yourself into the fandom.

Well... I got into ME pretty late in general. Played ME2 last year on PS3, but I didn't really jump into the fandom - was forewarned more than once about BioWare fans. Once I got a 360 (last Christmas!) I grabbed ME1 and played that and 2 again, only this time I had even more feelings so I kind of waded into the fandom *then*, fanfic and Tumblr and all.

tl;dr, I was late to the Mass Effect party, stuck out through all the ME3 crap and uh here I am, haha.

Better late then never! The only real difference is you didn't have to experience quite as much pain waiting for the next parts of the trilogy, and that's a good thing! (I know I got into Assassin's Creed late and loved having multiple games to catch up on. It was lovely.)

All that matters is you made it into the fandom, and you enjoyed the series. I think the majority of fans would appreciate that. :)

Oh yeah, for all the bad that was that ending I don't regret any time spent with the games or the fandom :) The only real waiting I had to do was for ME3, but I filled that void with my ME1 and 2 360 run. And the books. And the comics. It was quite the information overload XD

At least with AC they come out every year (not sure about after this year though) so the waiting is less painful. I got into AC halfway between Brotherhood and Revelations and I... still have to play Revelations before I let myself even buy ACIII.
