Makes sense, I suppose. I should have really figured it out myself. Heh.
Not seeing it happening, of course.... There are so many things that are not going to come to pass that would need to for that to happen...

My scientific wild-ass guess is that the kingdoms will be reunited under one Targaryen or another in order to fight the Others and generally restore order, and one of the surviving Starks will be appointed as lord/lady of the North -- but not king/queen.

That's one of the major things I think is Not Going to Happen. I don't think the North will remain independent - though whether it'll be reconquered by King's Landing, or absorbed into the Wildling Kingdom forming north of the Wall, split between the two, or simply flattened by the Others, I don't even care to speculate, at this point - and if it's absorbed by one of the other kingdoms, I don't think the Starks will be allowed to hold it (take a lesson from what happened with the Greyjoys, folks...).
