The hatred here is MORE THAN A BIT STRONG for me (especially because if you replace the names, this is exactly the kind of shit people sling at my APH OTP despite the fact that it isn't THAT commonly a side pairing in fics--- one of the reasons I often don't read fics for other pairings, actually), but I do feel similarly regarding the "why is it in every fic as a side pair?" with Prussia/Hungary. And that one is CERTAINLY not 'practically canon' or even close to it.

That being said I don't agree with all the comments here about how it's omg so squicky. But... I don't like the ship as much as I used to. This is namely because I find Spain to be pretty obnoxious though, so I'm not not into pairings with him, but also because their dynamic has just grown stale to me. Romano is one of my favorite characters though.

Personally, I find how fandom does Spain more obnoxious than anything - particularly where Romano is involved. [Sorry fandom, but Spain doesn't let Romano walk all over him in canon. Really, he doesn't - you can go check.] But I can see how he'd get on someone's nerves.

Though I completely agree about PruHun. That one is an automatic back button for me, though that's as much because they always have to make some reference to her hitting him with a frying pan, which strikes way too close to abuse for my own comfort.

Oh yeah fandom Spain can be pretty cringeworthy. He does kind of shrug off Romano's behavior at times (this often strikes more of a 'why bother' thing than a 'oh Romano's anger is so adorable~~' though), but not to the point that he's a doormat and yeah he does sometimes get upset over it. And seriously he's not THAT oblivious.

Lol oh god the frying pan thing. It bugs me also because it happens ALL THE TIME, and seriously even if the gag were really funny, doing it twenty times in a fic would certainly ruin it.

Oh god, that stupid frying pan thing. >_> In the actual comic, Hungary isn't actually so trigger-happy with it. The one time I remember, she was hesitant beforehand, and the only reason she even did it is because France was molesting Austria. Certainly not how fanfic tends to portray her.

Then again, some fanfics tend to flanderize the hell out of her - both the frying pan thing and the yaoi fangirl thing. Pro-tip, guys: downright forcing people to make out, blackmailing them into it, installing cameras in their bedroom - that doesn't make Hungary seem cute and identifiable. It makes her look creepy.

Absolutely. It's definitely a case of fandom taking what was pretty much a one time gag and blowing it out of proportion.

Oh yes on the yaoi fangirl thing. If I were reading a fic that from the getgo is total crack, I could probably shrug it off (to a degree). But as it is? In totally normal or even serious fics she'll be like making sex tapes (seriously!) of the people that are her coworkers, peers, fellow countries, whatever. How is this not creepy?

Then again, Hetalia is prone to doing that - taking one time gags and running with them and never letting go. I guess that's what happens with an inherently cracky premise?

And I hate how the characters treat it, too - like oh, it's just Hungary being herself again, it's a bit annoying but whatever. I'm pretty sure that if someone found out their friend was making sex tapes of them, they wouldn't shrug it off. It's really dissonant to me, I can't really get into fics that do this. (Though I agree, some cracky fics can do this to some degree).

Sorry for ranting, I just really like Hungary and really hate how some people write her.

Yeeeah, that's part of why I have the headcanon Spain's mostly trolling with the oblivious thing [and sometimes the cute thing, probably]. I mean, he's got both Romano and Iggy close enough for lulz worthy reactions, so why not? ;D But then again, that idea just amuses me too so XD;;

Yeah, my things is I've actually been in an abusive relationship, so seeing abuse played for laughs just...rubs me the wrong way, a lot.
