Is that Italy and Australia from Hetalia??
Sorry if I'm wrong I'm not super into that fandom...
But OP you gotta ship and let ship. There is ALWAYS going to be a ship that you can't stand that countless others love.
Or imagine it from the perspective of someone that loathes one of your ships... Can't do anything about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
(not OP)

It's Spain and South Italy (there are two Italys - North and South).

I agree with you, but I also sympathize with the OP. This is one of those ubiquitous pairings with rabid fans who will go berserk on you for saying anything negative at all about it. I'm willing to bet that the OP wouldn't hate the pairing so much if they hadn't been dogpiled for not liking it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in hetalia anymore, but man I hated this ship too.

Like there's just a point where the tsun is so egregious you're like....so...these people are going to be horrible and miserable at each other forever. Oh my god, just be with other people.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would be pretty hard to read it as not implied by canon. If you objected on the fucked-upness of the ship, I would get it, but if you're just hating to hate, well, it's a fairly common reading of the comics.

I actually agree that Spamano has some implications in canon, but...

well, it's a fairly common reading of the comics.

That is kind of irrelevant? Fandom reading something as a ship /=/ implied in canon. Like at all.

You are not alone, anon. I don't have anything against people who ship this, I'm just sick of it randomly showing up as a side pairing and overtaking the plot in fic that's supposed to be focused on other characters.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-20 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually something I've really noticed in Hetalia fic? People will bring in side-pairings and then SUDDENLY the fic is even more about the side pairing than the main pairing. Heck even if it's 'just as much' about the side pairing, you should say that up front I feel. I don't know how many times I've stopped reading a fic because I'm like "uh, I didn't click this because I wanted to read a France/Canada fic" (as an example).

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
This. Sometimes, if I'm not even that into the fic, I scroll past the side pairing bits because I honestly just don't care.

It's actually pretty prevalent with Spamano, so I can see the OP's point. Unless one or both of them are shipped with other people, they're almost always at least a background pairing. It's arguably even worse than USUK, because both England and America have other popular ships with them, whereas Romano and Spain don't really have any (really popular ships, that is.)
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-20 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I do that sometimes as well.

If we're talking about the side pairing thing, I think it's absolutely a lot more prevalent with Spamano than USUK (for exactly the reasons you stated). USUK has a lot more fics with them as the MAIN pairing of course... but there's a lot more variance with those two characters when it comes to side pairings featured in fics.

I only read fic for them when it's acknowledged how fucked-up and squicky their relationship is. And then they do it anyway.

I mean, wife-husbrandry, much? Gah ... Spain, I should be so disgusted by you but I can't help but read the fic ...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like you, OP. I like you a lot.

I loathe this pairing with a passion. Seeing it inspires irrational hatred and rage and so much do not want that it's ridiculous -- and it doesn't help that whenever I try to look up pictures of one or the other, it's flooded with "Spamano" bullshit that isn't even Spamano.

(Sorry, fandom, but two people standing next to each other does not a pairing picture make.)

Plus, as you said, it has a nasty tendency to crop up in fan fiction that otherwise has nothing to do with the two characters. You'd think at this point people would be able to get a little more creative but nope. And the whole "this ship is canon" thing--

Ugh! That argument alone pisses me off because I'd like them to point to one legitimate source that explicitly states the pairing is canon. Go on, Spamano fans. I can wait. Nothing? That's what I thought. Besides, this pairing is incredibly fucked up any way with the unhealthy dynamics.

Then again, even if you ignore the fact Romano loves to yell at Spain and hit him and all that other BS, there's the whole fact Spain raised Romano for much of his young life and thus qualifies as more of a father/older brother figure. Can we say major squick?

In short, OP, yes. I agree with you wholeheartedly and wish this pairing would go die in a fire along with quite a few (if not all) of the popular pairings in fandom.

The hatred here is MORE THAN A BIT STRONG for me (especially because if you replace the names, this is exactly the kind of shit people sling at my APH OTP despite the fact that it isn't THAT commonly a side pairing in fics--- one of the reasons I often don't read fics for other pairings, actually), but I do feel similarly regarding the "why is it in every fic as a side pair?" with Prussia/Hungary. And that one is CERTAINLY not 'practically canon' or even close to it.

That being said I don't agree with all the comments here about how it's omg so squicky. But... I don't like the ship as much as I used to. This is namely because I find Spain to be pretty obnoxious though, so I'm not not into pairings with him, but also because their dynamic has just grown stale to me. Romano is one of my favorite characters though.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I find how fandom does Spain more obnoxious than anything - particularly where Romano is involved. [Sorry fandom, but Spain doesn't let Romano walk all over him in canon. Really, he doesn't - you can go check.] But I can see how he'd get on someone's nerves.

Though I completely agree about PruHun. That one is an automatic back button for me, though that's as much because they always have to make some reference to her hitting him with a frying pan, which strikes way too close to abuse for my own comfort.

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-20 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah fandom Spain can be pretty cringeworthy. He does kind of shrug off Romano's behavior at times (this often strikes more of a 'why bother' thing than a 'oh Romano's anger is so adorable~~' though), but not to the point that he's a doormat and yeah he does sometimes get upset over it. And seriously he's not THAT oblivious.

Lol oh god the frying pan thing. It bugs me also because it happens ALL THE TIME, and seriously even if the gag were really funny, doing it twenty times in a fic would certainly ruin it.

I think...you should probably take a large step back from fandom, and do some other stuff for while. It's just a pairing in a fandom, not something that determines the course of someone's life [usually].

[personal profile] miss_maple 2012-11-20 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand the feeling. I like a lot of character's dynamics as just friends or siblings or just not-romantic relationships in general but it's pretty damn hard to find anything about that kind of stuff in this fandom since everyone ships everyone with everyone.
I also know I found people in fandom through rping who enjoy the same ships as me or, if they don't, at least respect my likes and don't constantly rub their pairing-I-don't-like in my face, so perhaps should you find a small group of people you talk to about fandom things that can involve long rants on why you dislike a pairing without it being taken badly, it probably will help with the feelings you get seeing it everywhere? It worked for me, I can ignore it much better now.

Also this canon ship thing in hetalia is pretty laughable since there's no real relationship exposed in Hetalia; the only one with "romantic feelings" aren't couples exactly given the characters never really got together, such as Belarus and Russia (her creepy "Marry me" thing) and chibitalia and HRE (they never officially got together even if it looked like it)so in the end, no pairing can really be considered canon. Hinted at perhaps, but then anything can hint at anything too; I enjoy Prucan but the fact Canada gave maple syrup to Prussia in a blog post during April's fool doesn't make it canon or hint at a relationship, it can be used as a base for your ships or used in stories but that's it.

I don't really care about Spamano either way, but as someone who doesn't ship USUK, I completely understand where you're coming from. There are some pairings that you just cannot get away from.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
USUK is gross and squicky, and I don't get how my fellow Americans can ship it. Just no.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-21 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Um why is it weirder for Americans to ship it than people from any other country?

(Unless you're saying it's a majority American fanbase for that pairing, in which case, that's untrue. It's as diversified as the rest of the fanbase.)

Uh...I am American, and I don't find it any grosser or squickier than many other pairings involving countries with long, complicated histories. I just don't really like the APH version of America.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see Spain with other countries, but Romano? I can only ship him with Spain, really. Considering I'm not into incest, who else could stand the guy?
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2012-11-20 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I'm the opposite. I can think of a few characters that I think would bounce off Romano really well in my mind (America and Belgium are tops).

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
America?
never thought of that. o.o
