Gift Thread: Lifelong wish fulfilled today!
When I was eight I saved up some money, which took forever because of tithing and the fact that I was eight, and was actually allowed to keep it and so excitedly I made plans to buy a Crayola Big Box the next time we went into town. Before that happened though my church announced Crayola crayons were unclean because they could possibly contain pig fat?
My tiny dreams were crushed. I remember the exact moment. I had to sit there and pretend I wasn't crying through the sermon.
To add insult to injury my mother said I could buy Roseart crayons instead.
...I ended up donating my money to an adult illiteracy charity to try and make myself feel better.
Well, today this kid that I babysat occasionally is moving. He came by to say goodbye and to give me a farewell thank you gift.
It was an unopened Big Box of Crayola crayons, 96-count with sharpener and new crayon smell. I just stared at it for a second and all of a sudden I realized two things. 1) It was mine. 2) I should probably stop gaping and thank him at some point. He was so excited that I liked it and he had even brought me a sharpie to write my name on the box (how cute was that?) and then we had to go through all of them and look at the color names.
His dad pulled me aside and said, "Don't worry, we got you a real gift, he just got it into his head you would want that." I just sorta looked at him dazedly and said something like "Real gift? What? This is the best thing anyone has ever given me are you crazy?" His parents ended up giving me a very lovely yellow sweater, which was nice, but pshhht little kid knew what he was doing! All the brand-new crayons are so beautiful I'm afraid to use them, I just like opening them and looking (and sniffing).
Now I get to spend a five-hour car trip dedicated to healing my tiny childhood grudge with a brand new box of crayons and an oversized sketchbook. My Thanksgiving travel plans are looking up!
So F!S what was the most thoughtful or best and/or weirdest gift you've ever gotten?
Or turn this into a thread for upcoming holiday gift ideas or craft ideas for old crayons. I don't care. I just wanted to brag about my new crayons.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)I had a few of those. But I thought you meant one of the REALLY huge ones, like with 100< crayons.
Re: Gift Thread: Lifelong wish fulfilled today!
I think my most memorable gift I ever got was for Christmas when I was about 10? My mom was working a temp agency job for like...I forget how long, but it seemed like forever. Dad was working nights at the time, so he was there with us (my brother and I were homeschooled) so we were being watched and all, but it was the first time we'd been without Mom for that long and none of us were particularly happy--Mom included, since all of her coworkers that weren't temps were lazy asses that didn't get any work done.
Anyway, at the time my brother and I had shared a Gameboy since I was about 6, but that was all we got. My mom hated video games, so she wouldn't let a console in the house no matter how much my brother and I wanted one, except for the rare times that my brother and I would save up to rent out a Sega Genesis from a local Hastings for a week so we could play Sonic and Power Rangers on there.
Anyway, we open all of our presents and we get some really nice stuff and we're happy. Then we open one final small gift that had "accidentally" been hidden behind the tree. We opened it and...it was a Nintendo64 game, Crusin' USA.
Me: Huh? ...We can't play this.
Dad: What? That's not a Gameboy game?
Me and brother: No...that's N64.
Dad: Oh, whoops.
Mom: Wait, we forgot a gift, didn't we?
Dad: Oh yeah, it's in the closet!
So Dad comes out of their bedroom with a HUGE box, and my brother and I are going "OH no way" but then we opened it and saw the Nintendo logo and just completely lost it.
Then I realized that my Mom had been working that temp job so that they could afford to get us the Nintendo64. The realization that my Mom had been working so hard to get us a gift she knew we'd love even though she didn't like video games hit me so hard I burst into tears.
So yeah, best gift ever. Ever.

My most thoughtful *and* weirdest gift was probably the time a friend of mine got me a rolling laundry basket filled with beer for my 21st birthday. I had a bad back and a long walk to the student center laundry room, so it came in *very* handy.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)The only thing I can think of that comes close, is way way back when I was in high school, one of my friends had a white shirt that was just like Han Solo's in The Empire Strikes Back. I really really wanted that shirt. I complimented it every time she wore it, and told her that it would be okay if she ever got tired of it, or wanted to give it to me. I couldn't tell her WHY, of course, because I guess it wasn't cool to be geeky back then. Anyway, long story short, she wrapped it up and gave it to me for my birthday. And I loved it so much, and I just thought it was the sweetest thing ever that she actually gave me the shirt off her back.
:-)

I think the best gift I've ever gotten was a sword, I think it might be a replica from The Last Samurai, but IDGAF because my parents bought me a freaking sword.

My ex bought me a limited edition sonic screwdriver for my birthday this year! That was like the most awesome gift I have ever gotten! His mother also ordered a T-shirt from House md to me, because her other son had one and I thought it was awesome!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)But that's not the nifty gift. Before I my parents got me my pony, they gave me a spring horse that I could ride up and down the sidewalk out in front of the house. I loved that little bouncy horse, and even after I got my pony, and before I outgrew that bouncy horse, I still rode him.
Fast forward, about thirty years, and my parents were visiting for Yule. As always, when asked what I wanted for a present, I said, "A pony!" Well. Christmas day, Mom dragged me out of the house and to the trunk of her car. She opened it, and inside was the same bouncy pony. I was shocked and delighted, and couldn't believe she'd found the horse again.
One of her friends came to visit us, and I was told by said friend that Mom spotted the bouncy horse across the flea market, and ran over to buy him. She then carried him all the way back across the flea market, and refused to let her friend help.
So, that's one of the best gifts I've ever received. And, yes, ten years + later, I still have that bouncy horse.

With the old crowns, you can melt them on a canvas and try to make art

Craft ideas for old crayons... you could turn them into a pretty candle or a wax painting. Those were popular a while back, I always thought they looked cool.

I think my best gift so far may have been the Dremel my girlfriend gave me a couple Christmases ago. As a cosplayer who likes making the props more than the costumes, that opened me up to so many new possibilities - and then we bought a house, and it's come in handy for minor home improvement projects too.
I'm reminded, though, of when I was about 18 and discovered the Sailor Moon anime via a friend, who caught it randomly on TV and developed a huge crush on Sailor Jupiter. (He was also 18ish.) I wound up hunting down a Sailor Jupiter doll for him - and this was in the days before most people had the internet, so I was hunting through Kay-Bee and Toys'R'Us and stuff - and he almost started crying when I gave it to him.

I don't know if I'd advise it, but we used to melt our old crayons down on the stove to make "candles."

This is going to be vague because if I were to go into details it might out me anonymously speaking, but when I finished this big thing that was a dream of mine but not many people supported, my great aunt came to me and gave me my great grandmother's ring. It was ring her children had given to her one year and that she wore until she died. My great aunt came to me and said she had talked it over with her brothers and that what I did was totally something Mama B (what we all called my great grandma) would have loved to do or read about, and that Mama would have been so proud and wanted me to have the ring.
I don't wear rings and I'm not generally a sentimental person, but that meant a lot to me. I've always thought Mama B was a super cool lady and wished I knew her better. She's someone I looked up to and admired and to have this gift and the spirit in which it was given to me...it was pretty awesome.

Re: Gift Thread: Lifelong wish fulfilled today!
I love pretty much every present I get from everybody, but the weirdest present I ever got was one of those weird spiral pens. My stepmother gave it to me for Christmas when I was, like, 17 (and it was the only present she gave me that year). She never puts any thought into what she gets me anyway, because she doesn't like me, but at least she usually gets me something useful, like a sweater or a scarf.
But the random buzzy spiral pen... yeah, I never used that, because I hate writing with pens. (I prefer mechanical pencils.)
