Well, of course they "use money to hire it" - or, rather, their promoter does. That's how one hires a concert venue - by forking over a rental fee for the use of the venue. Do you think the management gives it away for free to super-special people if they pass some sort of test?

Of course they rent it using money; that's how things work. You pay a fee and use the venue.

That being said, I get what you mean; there are times I see groups have a Tokyo Dome show and I raise my eyebrow because I know how long it took AKB48, for example, to get a show there. For example, Big Bang does do really well in Japan and they've had some good, lasting success beyond the whole hallyu wave. However, their oricon sales for their album were ~100k and the last Japanese single was ~36k; even though this doesn't count digital sales, this feels kind of small.

Yes, but kpop groups now play decently large shows in countries outside of Asia when they have never officially released anything at all and, therefore, have never charted in that territory and no-one makes a big song and dance about it. For example, Big Bang are playing big sell-out shows in London next month and no-one is crying that they don't deserve to do so because they never charted in the UK.

From a promoter's point of view, it's about bums on seats, not a group's position on the Oricon. If they can sell the tickets and fill the venue on the night, that's all that matters, isn't it? Big western acts play the Tokyo Dome and no-one seems to think they should be subjected to some sort of vetting procedure to do so, yet this idea that certain acts - specifically Korean acts - don't "deserve" it seems to pop up over and over. It's just a big venue and I could rent it for my birthday party and sit in it by myself if I had the money to pay for it, but some Jpop fans have elevated it to some sort of Holy Temple and get their knickers in a knot every time a Kpop act uses it. You don't see them pissing and moaning when Madonna uses it or when it's hired by American sports teams. It's just Koreans they have a problem with.

No, you're definitely right; it's just me kind of wondering "hey, they sell what normally would get a smaller hall venue or perhaps a smaller place, but Tokyo Dome?" It just makes me wonder, is all. Especially since big Western acts can sell well on the Oricon charts.

Not saying Korean acts don't "deserve it" or whatever, but I'm just amazed that they can fill the Tokyo Dome, I mean, I wouldn't be surprised about SNSD or Kara, but some of the other acts.

What? I mean seriously, what? Do you think that the Tokyo Dome offers it's facilities for free to Japanese artists or something? How the hell does that work as a business model? The bigger the projected audience, the larger the venue. It's not rocket science. Obviously, these K-pop people have enough of a Japanese following to make it worth their while to rent the (probably very expensive) Tokyo Dome.

Tohoshinki spend half a year per year in Japan and also speak Japanese fluently, so... I don't think you're telling the 'truth' at all tbh.

So... being successful enough in another country that you can book a big venue means you're not a serious band? Is this K-pop: Portland?
