This is what my archery team did when it was found out that Michael had never seen the LotR movies:

1. Secure rights to television on a Saturday night in someone's apartment.
2. Look up recipe for lembas bread.
3. Rent entire trilogy extended edition from the library.
4. Party until 4AM with friends, drinking, and delicious breads.

The secret is to make a social event out of it, especially if your IRL friends already like the movies. Actually, come to think of it, an entirely different group of friends and I did the same thing a few years earlier, except without bread and alcohol and spaced over a few weekends.

Also, don't worry about not 'understanding the entire universe.' I seriously doubt anybody cares at this point, and on the base level it's pretty accessible.
