Writing as someone who knew nothing of Tolkein's work before seeing the LoTR films, then later read the books and found them brilliant in concept and nearly unrecoverably dry in style, I feel that the LoTR books are rather long, and to be honest an acquired taste. The films are easier to digest, and although long for a film they are still manageable. Sure you may not get all the intricacies of the politics from first viewing, or even from tenth viewing considering how much is cut/glossed over from the books, but the basic premise, the major societies and how they interact, and the plot as an A to B storyline is pretty clear, even if certain plot points feel out of left field. It's not something with a huge twist, or something particularly cerebral.
IMHO Tolkein's biggest plus is the huge amounts of worldbuilding that is present in his books, you can get sucked into the life of a chracter who only has three lines of dialogue and still feel you know them because the world is very fleshed out, BUT you do not need to experience/understand all the world building to understand the actual plot.

Underdog has token-of-evil, must destroy it; conflict between societies, must overcome for the greater good (i.e. assist the underdog); failure = DOOM

I'm sorry, but - for heaven's sake, at least spell the man's name right if you're going to talk about his books.
