Okay, first off, I am not American. So you can quit with that.

Secondly, you know what else is more prevalent in low-prestige class dynamics? Neo-nazism! Woohoo!

Obviously, classism is a huge problem that needs to be addressed. But just because a term or a belief system is more prevalent in low-prestige classes that doesn't mean it should be free of criticism.

aw did you have to godwin yourself, this could have been fun.

Your mode of speech (writing) suggests very much that you are American or that you have learned American English. Canadian, perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Most folks around the world learn American English these days. It's not as if there's any intrinsic benefit to British English, right?

do they live in countries where the vernacular swearword cunt is commonly used? If she is this bothered by it, she must live somewhere where it forms part of common speech. Some where like, oooh, North America. Correct me if I am wrong, but does the word cunt come up in ESOL classes very often?

Except that apparently in British English sexist words are magically no longer sexist because I guess women quit being oppressed once Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister? Or something?

Not true. British english is vastly preffered on mainland Europe. Also in a lot of parts of Africa. I don't know about Asia. But that's still not "most" of the world.

China loves British English too. I have a US friend teaching in China and her students keep telling her that her spelling is wrong.

British English is preferred in Argetina (and I think that in South America in general) and it is the default English taught in schools. Generally, American English courses are reserved for fast, specific studies (especially businessmen/woman learning how to communicate) while people who study English to have it as a second/third language get British English (which tends to include taking Cambridge tests). Then again, Argentina has old and deep links to the United Kingdom.

Bwahaha Australia and New Zealand?* You're either an idiot or a troll.

*Only countries I definitely know about. Feel free to keep listing!

Fuck, i was having fun replying to you, but it's over now.

It's a good thing you're here to criticise them. You can fix the world! You can tell us all how wrong we are! You can teach us to overlook classism, something that effects us all, and focus instead on reintroducing sexist meanings to words that we've evolved beyond a sexist meaning. Oh, thank you for bestowing your wisdom upon us and showing us the light! Now we can stop talking about things like Home Rule and instead educate those around us that cunt is now a sexist word again and classism is a lesser problem than the inherent sexism in that word.

"We've evolved beyond a sexist meaning"
