or even in their own country. my family was irish and faced terrible discrimination when they emigrated to the us even though they would be considered "white." but that's not really racism because they were white!

The Irish are just one of many fascinating example of why broad-stroke discussions of racism don't work. Down through history, the Irish have been sold into slavery and have been slave masters. Irish heroes fought colonial rule and were apologists for the Empire elsewhere. The most endemic racism in modern Ireland is against the Travelling community, who don't even qualify under certain international discrimination rulings because of the troublesome boundries of 'ethnicity' as a concept.

If only we weren't so short on space on the internet. Then we could have nuanced discussions of issues based on specific cultural contexts instead of having to limit ourselves to just roaring slogans from bingo cards all of the time.
