I read this as, "Boo-hoo! Someone's telling me not to use a particular word because it has a grossly offensive meaning in their culture! I'm going to go to Iran and start giving the thumbs-up sign to people on the street, since my right to be offensive overrides their right to be offended!"

I used to watch all the Americans in Iraq doing that and I laughed until I cried.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
See? It's stupid, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
The internet is not America. Anon you're referring to is being a bit of an oblivious asshat, but it's not the same thing as deliberately doing something offensive to a given culture in that culture's own space.

Such as throwing out a remark in a multi-national setting about what the English do and then discovering that it's the whole of Britain and then telling them all they need to change their ways.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bad analogy. We're not talking about hoards of British people charging around Canada (which is where the chief proponent of omg!sexist butthurt on this thread claims to be from) going "cunt this" and "cunt that". No-one is planning on being deliberately offensive in a country and a context where people will be offended. What we're getting, though, transatlantic disapproval and pearl-clutching and name-calling for using a word how we like in our own country of residence. Canada can remain safely cunt-free, but please spare us the undergraduate lectures about how we're so sexist and ignorant because we don't find the word horribly offensive on our own home turf.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Except there are plenty of Americans who don't find "cunt" any more offensive than any other vulgar insult either, so your point doesn't stand.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's because there are plenty of Americans who, like plenty of Brits, don't give a fuck about sexism and refuse to listen when someone points it out to them.

I assure you, there are people in Britain that think the word cunt is offensive and sexist for exactly the same reasons I've been arguing all through this thread.

Just because they're in the minority there doesn't mean Britain on the whole thinks cunt is an acceptable word.

So, the bottom line is still that you want people in a foreign country thousands of miles away from Canada, who aren't within your hearing and who aren't even talking to you or about you to adjust their speech because YOU don't like it. No real battles to fight?

On behalf of logical Canadians everywhere, I apologize for butthurt!anon.

And I assure you, there are plenty of people who care about sexism who don't think words like "cunt" are always offensive.

Believe it or not, it's ok to disagree about things pertinent to an issue you care about. Using that disagreement to try and discredit others just makes you look like a self-righteous ass.

Feminism is not a hivemind. Though you wouldn't always know or believe that based on some of its more vocal members in certain places on the Internet
