Re: Rewrite a fictional event better than canon did!

River Song's story:

She has nothing to do with The Most Convoluted Plot Ever Conceived by Humankind, nor is she romantically interested in the Doctor.

Because she is Susan.

That is why she knows the Doctor's real name, that is why she knows so much about the TARDIS and Time Lord stuff, and that's why she can regenerate and time-travel.

IT WOULD HAVE MADE SO MUCH MORE SENSE. Simple, but a satisfying end to a mystery.

(Alternatively, she could have been Ace, because that would have been amazing. Ace was awesome, and I would have liked some followup on the "Ace goes to Time Lord School" angle from way back in the day.)

Back in season 5, I'd have preferred no end to the mystery whatsoever and no significant information divulged about the character. Just River Song popping up once a season to troll the Doctor and make people's heads hurt with the timey-wimey confusion. Maybe with her appearing at drastically different ages each time and mentioning something about a futuristic device that makes people revert to looking young again but which can only be used once every couple decades to explain the actress's aging :D And then eventually have her whole big romance with the Doctor as per "Silence in the Library" take place offscreen.
