Re: Rewrite a fictional event better than canon did!
She has nothing to do with The Most Convoluted Plot Ever Conceived by Humankind, nor is she romantically interested in the Doctor.
Because she is Susan.
That is why she knows the Doctor's real name, that is why she knows so much about the TARDIS and Time Lord stuff, and that's why she can regenerate and time-travel.
IT WOULD HAVE MADE SO MUCH MORE SENSE. Simple, but a satisfying end to a mystery.
(Alternatively, she could have been Ace, because that would have been amazing. Ace was awesome, and I would have liked some followup on the "Ace goes to Time Lord School" angle from way back in the day.)
