And yet, people in plenty of places do use cunt to refer to female genitalia. Fuck, people in this thread have said "hey, I use it to refer to my vagina!"

So it's really obviously not divorced from the context of meaning vagina.

It's not a North America-specific context. It is a sexist slur. Everywhere. It's just that it's a more commonly used and accepted slur in England than it is in North America.

I mean, look, it's like saying that because 'spazz' (a word that, to my understanding, is a hugely offensive ableist slur in England) is a frequently used word in some parts of North America and most people don't realize that it has ableist origins, that means it's totally okay for people in North America to keep using it. It's not. Just because the majority of people aren't aware of its actual meaning doesn't mean that meaning isn't still there.

Your life is very empty, isn't it? It's amazing that you learned all that you did in your college sociology course because you are incredibly thick. Of course it's okay for people in North America to use spaz because of the context in which they are using it. If they go to the UK and use it, then it's offensive. It's called context. If you don't like the way we use cunt, don't come here. Stay away from Brits in general if it's that much of a problem for you. You can start by tossing your computer and mobile in the bin because we're not going to leave the internet anymore than we're going to change our language just to suit you.

How about this - if you don't want people to get on your case for using sexist slurs, don't use them.

Amazing thought, huh? What do you say?

You can call it sexist all you want. It's even true for you where you live. You really need to understand that your views and even the common views of the people where you live do not apply to the whole world. Go ahead and call everybody asshole. Get upset and resort to insults in the face of reason. It's amusing to more than a few of us, judging by the replies.

yeah, wow, let's just sift through every single page on the internet looking for people from other countries who used words that mean something bad in the U.S. so we can scream at them and called them sexist/homophobic/racist. that's definitely an appropriate response.

Also, thank you for ignoring this: And yet, people in plenty of places do use cunt to refer to female genitalia. Fuck, people in this thread have said "hey, I use it to refer to my vagina!"

So it's really obviously not divorced from the context of meaning vagina.

it just goes to show you don't actually have any argument to make in your favour.

So what? The word fuck is used to describe penetrative sex and is also used as a swearword. Does this mean anyone using the word fuck as an insult also hates and fears sex. I can call someone a prick and simultaneously not hate and fear men. So what if cunt hasn't become wholly divorced from also meaning female genitals? It doesn't mean every instance of use of the word is a horrific act of misogyny carried out by woman-haters.

There are aspects of North American word usage that rub me up the wrong way but it genuinely wouldn't occur to me to tell you that you couldn't use specific words in your own country. You come across here as patronising, arrogant and self-righteous. You have called a whole country ignorant, called women self-hating sexists and generally treated us like idiots because we didn't bow down to your almighty Canadian regional university sociology course opinion on the correct use of a slang word. What have you achieved? Nothing more than the usual SWJ internal glow of "I rule, you drool" self-righteousness. I hope it keeps you warm.
