Something Good That Happened Today

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I really just wanted to share this somewhere and not feel judged.

I'm down to the last couple of weeks in this college term, working as an intern in a non-profit organization. While talking to my on-site supervisor today, she asked me about my next term/plans. Normally we are set up already but my prospective placement just emailed me this week that they aren't taking any interns this Spring. I'm waiting to hear back from the program coordinator at my school but I've no info at this time. I relayed the info to my supervisor and she suggested that I might ask to return to this site for my second internship.

This particular site only takes first practicum (internship) students. They only take one per term. They already have a student in training to come on board in January. She suggested I ask my coordinator if I can return to this organization if the other site doesn't work out. I explained to her that the students don't have any say in the placement; our coordinator chooses the slot and we fill it. We may request what days our campus class meets but even that is on a first come, first served basis.

After confirming that I wish to continue with her organization as a volunteer, my supervisor said that she would like me to consider coming back as a volunteer working in the office, assisting the staff. This organization uses a LOT of volunteers and my on-site supervisor is on of their coordinators. Her usual support person is taking an extended LOA and she would like me to continue working with her and her team.

I thanked her for the offer and said I'd think about it carefully. I'm wildly flattered but worried that it might not be fair to the incoming intern for me to still be on-site. I'm concerned it won't be allowed, even if I can swing the time for it. Mostly I'm a bit stunned because I have very low self-esteem and I can't believe that they want me to stay on. Granted it's only volunteer work but it's nice to feel wanted. I feel like I've represented my program in a good light and that I've done well, all things considered. I'm not quite floating but I certainly feel lighthearted if nothing more.

I can tell you that I've worked really hard in this placement. I've done my very best, kept a positive outlook, turned my hand to anything asked of me without fuss to learn as much as possible. I know how many hours I've put into this placement. Objectively I've worked hard. Emotionally I worry that I'm more like Mr. Bean, wandering around without a clue or any redeeming qualities. I haven't quite grasped the idea that they might want to change how they take their students because they liked me/my work.

tl;dr--- They liked me, they really liked me! And I hardly believed it. ;D

Congrats! I hope it goes well for you, if you agree to do it.
