Why do you need to be so defensive towards Japan and China? Their names are silly and self-centered -- like so many original-language names -- and out of place in the modern day. Just because it's absolutely certain that the world is no longer flat and larger than Asia (therefore, the sun can't be said to rise from Japan) doesn't mean Japan should change its name. Just because the world is larger than China then (which means it's not more in the middle than anything other nation in, you know, a globe) doesn't mean it should change its name. My original point stands.

And out of curiosity, did you choose to ignore the first part of my post (you know, the one that pointed out the flaws with other "American" nations complaining about USA being shortened to America wasn't just an American thing but also something done outside of the US)? I don't know, it just seems odd that you would choose to focus on defending the Eastern countries when that wasn't what the comment was about.

You don't get it do you? You can't make up reasons for country names and say they are silly. Many countries have self centered names. Who are you to say they're "out of place?"

If you want to complain about USA being called "America" in other countries, why not ask yourself why people in the USA call their country America and themselves Americans? I bet the other countries say that because 1)USA-sians or USA-nian or USA-whatever isn't a word they hear used for "Americans" and 2) because "American" is a very common word used to call people from the USA.

As for your example with Japanese, nobody knows what USA-jin is because nobody in Japan uses the letters U S and A to mean "USA" in Japanese. If you didn't want to say "Amerika-jin" you could have used "米国人" which I'm sure everyone understands.

Except if you take a step back and look, most country names are silly. That's not to say they aren't charming and that's not to say they should be changed (cue original point), just that their origins are pretty silly.

I wasn't complaining about that at all.

In fact, I'm pretty sure we're on the same side regarding this issue of nomenclature. What a pity.
