it's the "just" xenophobia bit that sets people's nerves on edge. Like it's just not as bad. But Jews and white eastern europeans were regarded as racially different by the Third Reich. They were considered non-Aryan, degenerate, and of wholly different ancestry. Their treatment was racist. Americans can be, pardon the pun, very black and white about what constitutes racism and it's all based around "classic" 19th century division of races, which is rather artificial and not very helpful in understanding people's lived experience of racism. I've seen people on LJ arguing with Jewish people to say that the Holocaust wasn't an act of racism because European Jews are white. You'd need to have an A+ in asshole class to assert that one to someone's face.
