It's not something I find horribly offensive but it also isn't the only place called "America". Other countries in the Americas are on a continent named "America" so that is still part of the place they come from.
Honestly, it's kind of a dilemma, since we don't have a good word in English to mean "person from the United States" if that's what you're trying to say. But if you're saying "I'm from America" - there are a lot of people who perceive that as "I'm from one of the American continents" so why not just say "I'm from the US"
